To Mgr Felice Cenci. Best of Rectors and to my brothers of the Urban College the world over.
This book is intended for all those who are seriously interested in the New Testament, and its aim is to investigate the particular character of one very important part of the latter: the third gospel and the Acts of the Apostles, the two books which we owe to St Luke.
Needless to say, this investigation is neither comprehensive nor final; nor is the treatment of all points equally detailed. I have concentrated on those parts where I feel I have something valuable to say of my own, either because they interest me more, or because they have been somewhat passed over in this country or by Catholic writers.
I owe much to the advice and help of friends both in Rome and in England: in Rome, to friends at Propaganda, firstly Monsig-nor Garofalo, then very many others who have assisted me in one way or another, among whom I would like to mention Father Bob Rose; in England, to Father Edmund Hill, O.P., who most kindly lent me a lively unpublished thesis entitled 'Messianic Fulfillment according to the Gospel of St Luke', to Mr and Mrs Sheed, and above all to my mother and members of the family, especially my sister Cecily, who at a difficult moment carried through a careful revision of the whole work. For the help of all, named and unnamed, many thanks.
I am proud to dedicate this, my first book, whose subject is the gospel of the Gentiles, to the members of my Roman college, where men of every race and continent live together in the dearest of fellowships.
