And the two angels came to Sodom at evening. And Lot sat by the gate of Sodom, and Lot having seen them, rose up to meet them, and he worshiped with his face to the ground, and said, | The sinfulness of Sodom. Gn.19.1-11 | The two angels came to Sodom in the evening; and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and bowed himself with his face to the earth, | וַיָּבֹאוּ שְׁנֵי הַמַּלְאָכִים סְדֹמָה בָּעֶרֶב וְלֹוט יֹשֵׁב בְּשַׁעַר־סְדֹם וַיַּרְא־לֹוט וַיָּקָם לִקְרָאתָם וַיִּשְׁתַּחוּ אַפַּיִם אָרְצָה׃ |
1 |
Lo! [my] lords, turn aside to the house of your servant, and rest from your journey, and wash your feet, and having risen early in the morning you shall depart on your journey. And they said, Nay, but we will lodge in the street. | | and said, "My lords, turn aside, I pray you, to your servant's house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise up early and go on your way." They said, "No; we will spend the night in the street."
And he constrained them, and they turned aside to him, and they entered into his house, and he made a feast for them, and baked unleavened cakes for them, and they did eat. | | But he urged them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.
But before they went to sleep, the men of the city, the Sodomites, compassed the house, both young and old, all the people together. | | But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house; | טֶרֶם יִשְׁכָּבוּ וְאַנְשֵׁי הָעִיר אַנְשֵׁי סְדֹם נָסַבּוּ עַל־הַבַּיִת מִנַּעַר וְעַד־זָקֵן כָּל־הָעָם מִקָּצֶה׃ |
4 |
And they called out Lot, and said to him, Where are the men that went in to you this night? bring them out to us that we may be with them. | | and they called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them."
And Lot went out to them to the porch, and he shut the door after him, | | Lot went out of the door to the men, shut the door after him, | וַיֵּצֵא אֲלֵהֶם לֹוט הַפֶּתְחָה וְהַדֶּלֶת סָגַר אַחֲרָיו׃ |
6 |
and said to them, By no means, brethren, do not act villainously. | | and said, "I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly.
But I have two daughters, who have not known a man. I will bring them out to you, and you use them as it may please you, only do no injury to these men, to avoid which they came under the shelter of my roof. | | Behold, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please; only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof."
And they said to him, Stand back there, you came in to sojourn, was it also to judge? Now then we would harm you more than them. And they pressed hard on the man, even Lot, and they drew nigh to break the door. | | But they said, "Stand back!" And they said, "This fellow came to sojourn, and he would play the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them." Then they pressed hard against the man Lot, and drew near to break the door.
And the men stretched forth their hands and drew Lot in to them into the house, and shut the door of the house. | | But the men put forth their hands and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut the door.
And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great, and they were wearied with seeking the door. | | And they struck with blindness the men who were at the door of the house, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves groping for the door.
And the men said to Lot, Have you here sons-in-law, or sons or daughters, or if you have any other friend in the city, bring them out of this place. | Lot leaves Sodom. Gn.19.12-21 | Then the men said to Lot, "Have you anyone else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or any one you have in the city, bring them out of the place; | וַיֹּאמְרוּ הָאֲנָשִׁים אֶל־לֹוט עֹד מִי־לְךָ פֹה חָתָן וּבָנֶיךָ וּבְנֹתֶיךָ וְכֹל אֲשֶׁר־לְךָ בָּעִיר הֹוצֵא מִן־הַמָּקֹום׃ |
12 |
For we are going to destroy this place; for their cry has been raised up before the Lord, and the Lord has sent us to destroy it. | | for we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it."
And Lot went out, and spoke to his sons-in-law who had married his daughters, and said, Rise up, and depart out of this place, for the Lord is about to destroy the city; but he seemed to be speaking absurdly before his sons-in-law. | | So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, "Up, get out of this place; for the LORD is about to destroy the city." But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting.
But when it was morning, the angels hastened Lot, saying, Arise and take your wife, and your two daughters whom you hast, and go forth; lest you also be destroyed with the iniquities of the city. | | When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city."
And they were troubled, and the angels laid hold on his hand, and the hand of his wife, and the hands of his two daughters, in that the Lord spared him. | | But he lingered; so the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him forth and set him outside the city.
And it came to pass when they brought them out, that they said, Save your own life by all means; look not round to that which is behind, nor stay in all the country round about, escape to the mountain, lest perhaps you be overtaken together with them. | | And when they had brought them forth, they said, "Flee for your life; do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley; flee to the hills, lest you be consumed."
And Lot said to them, I pray, Lord, | | And Lot said to them, "Oh, no, my lords; | וַיֹּאמֶר לֹוט אֲלֵהֶם אַל־נָא אֲדֹנָי׃ |
18 |
since your servant has found mercy before you, and you have magnified your righteousness, in what you do towards me that my soul may live,-- but I shall not be able to escape to the mountain, lest perhaps the calamity overtake me and I die. | | behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life; but I cannot flee to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me, and I die.
Behold this city is near for me to escape thither, which is a small one, and there shall I be preserved, is it not little? and my soul shall live because of you. | | Behold, yonder city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there - is it not a little one? - and my life will be saved!"
And he said to him, Behold, I have had respect to you also about this thing, that I should not overthrow the city about which you have spoken. | | He said to him, "Behold, I grant you this favor also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken.
Hasten therefore to escape thither, for I shall not be able to do anything until you are come thither; therefore he called the name of that city, Segor. | | Make haste, escape there; for I can do nothing till you arrive there." Therefore the name of the city was called Zo'ar.
The sun was risen upon the earth, when Lot entered into Segor. | | The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zo'ar. |
And the Lord rained on Sodom and Gomorrha brimstone and fire from the Lord out of heaven. | The destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Gn.19.24-29 | Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomor'rah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; | וַיהוָה הִמְטִיר עַל־סְדֹם וְעַל־עֲמֹרָה גָּפְרִית וָאֵשׁ מֵאֵת יְהוָה מִן־הַשָּׁמָיִם׃ |
24 |
And he overthrew these cities, and all the country round about, and all that dwelt in the cities, and the plants springing out of the ground. | | and he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground.
And his wife looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. | | But Lot's wife behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. |
And Abraam rose up early to go to the place, where he had stood before the Lord. | | And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD; | וַיַּשְׁכֵּם אַבְרָהָם בַּבֹּקֶר אֶל־הַמָּקֹום אֲשֶׁר־עָמַד שָׁם אֶת־פְּנֵי יְהוָה׃ |
27 |
And he looked towards Sodom and Gomorrha, and towards the surrounding country, and saw, and behold a flame went up from the earth, as the smoke of a furnace. | | and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomor'rah and toward all the land of the valley, and beheld, and lo, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.
And it came to pass that when God destroyed all the cities of the region round about, God remembered Abraam, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when the Lord overthrew those cities in which Lot dwelt. | | So it was, that when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt.
And Lot went up out of Segor, and dwelt in the mountain, he and his two daughters with him, for he feared to dwell in Segor; and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters with him. | Generations - Lot. Gn.19.30-38 | Now Lot went up out of Zo'ar, and dwelt in the hills with his two daughters, for he was afraid to dwell in Zo'ar; so he dwelt in a cave with his two daughters.
And the elder said to the younger, Our father is old, and there is no one on the earth who shall come in to us, as it is fit in all the earth. | | And the first-born said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth.
Come and let us make our father drink wine, and let us sleep with him, and let us raise up seed from our father. | | Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve offspring through our father."
So they made their father drink wine in that night, and the elder went in and lay with her father that night, and he knew not when he slept and when he rose up. | | So they made their father drink wine that night; and the first-born went in, and lay with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that the elder said to the younger, Behold, I slept last night with our father, let us make him drink wine in this night also, and you go in and sleep with him, and let us raise up seed of our father. | | And on the next day, the first-born said to the younger, "Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve offspring through our father."

So they made their father drink wine in that night also, and the younger went in and slept with her father, and he knew not when he slept, nor when he arose. | | So they made their father drink wine that night also; and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose.
And the two daughters of Lot conceived by their father. | | Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. |
And the elder bore a son and called his name Moab, saying, [He is] of my father. This is the father of the Moabites to this present day. | | The first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day.
And the younger also bore a son, and called his name Amman, saying, The son of my family. This is the father of the Ammanites to this present day. | | The younger also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites to this day.
