And Joseph fell upon his father's face, and wept on him, and kissed him. | | Then Joseph fell on his father's face, and wept over him, and kissed him.
And Joseph commanded his servants the embalmers to embalm his father; and the embalmers embalmed Israel. | | And Joseph commanded his servants the physicians to embalm his father. So the physicians embalmed Israel; | וַיְצַו יֹוסֵף אֶת־עֲבָדָיו אֶת־הָרֹפְאִים לַחֲנֹט אֶת־אָבִיו וַיַּחַנְטוּ הָרֹפְאִים אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵל׃ |
2 |
And they fulfilled forty days for him, for so are the days of embalming numbered; and Egypt mourned for him seventy days. | | forty days were required for it, for so many are required for embalming. And the Egyptians wept for him seventy days.
And when the days of mourning were past, Joseph spoke to the princes of Pharao, saying, If I have found favour in your sight, speak concerning me in the ears of Pharao, saying, | | And when the days of weeping for him were past, Joseph spoke to the household of Pharaoh, saying, "If now I have found favor in your eyes, speak, I pray you, in the ears of Pharaoh, saying, | וַיַּעַבְרוּ יְמֵי בְכִיתֹו וַיְדַבֵּר יֹוסֵף אֶל־בֵּית פַּרְעֹה לֵאמֹר אִם־נָא מָצָאתִי חֵן בְּעֵינֵיכֶם דַּבְּרוּ־נָא בְּאָזְנֵי פַרְעֹה לֵאמֹר׃ |
4 |
My father adjured me, saying, In the sepulchre which I dug for myself in the land of Chanaan, there you shall bury me; now then I will go up and bury my father, and return again. | | My father made me swear, saying, 'I am about to die: in my tomb which I hewed out for myself in the land of Canaan, there shall you bury me.' Now therefore let me go up, I pray you, and bury my father; then I will return."
And Pharao said to Joseph, Go up, bury your father, as he constrained you to swear. | | And Pharaoh answered, "Go up, and bury your father, as he made you swear."
So Joseph went up to bury his father; and all the servants of Pharao went up with him, and the elders of his house, and all the elders of the land of Egypt. | | So Joseph went up to bury his father; and with him went up all the servants of Pharaoh, the elders of his household, and all the elders of the land of Egypt, | וַיַּעַל יֹוסֵף לִקְבֹּר אֶת־אָבִיו וַיַּעֲלוּ אִתֹּו כָּל־עַבְדֵי פַרְעֹה זִקְנֵי בֵיתֹו וְכֹל זִקְנֵי אֶרֶץ־מִצְרָיִם׃ |
7 |
And all the household of Joseph, and his brethren, and all the house of his father, and his kindred; and they left behind the sheep and the oxen in the land of Gesem. | | as well as all the household of Joseph, his brothers, and his father's household; only their children, their flocks, and their herds were left in the land of Goshen.
And there went up with him also chariots and horsemen; and there was a very great company. | | And there went up with him both chariots and horsemen; it was a very great company.
And they came to the threshing-floor of Atad, which is beyond Jordan; and they bewailed him with a great and very sore lamentation; and he made a mourning for his father seven days. | | When they came to the threshing floor of Atad, which is beyond the Jordan, they lamented there with a very great and sorrowful lamentation; and he made a mourning for his father seven days.
And the inhabitants of the land of Chanaan saw the mourning at the floor of Atad, and said, This is a great mourning to the Egyptians; therefore he called its name, The mourning of Egypt, which is beyond Jordan. | | When the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, saw the mourning on the threshing floor of Atad, they said, "This is a grievous mourning to the Egyptians." Therefore the place was named A'bel-mizraim; it is beyond the Jordan.
And thus his sons did to him. | | Thus his sons did for him as he had commanded them; | וַיַּעֲשׂוּ בָנָיו לֹו כֵּן כַּאֲשֶׁר צִוָּם׃ |
12 |
So his sons carried him up into the land of Chanaan, and buried him in the double cave, which cave Abraam bought for possession of a burying place, of Ephrom the Chettite, before Mambre. | | for his sons carried him to the land of Canaan, and buried him in the cave of the field at Mach-pe'lah, to the east of Mamre, which Abraham bought with the field from Ephron the Hittite, to possess as a burying place.
And Joseph returned to Egypt, he and his brethren, and those that had gone up with him to bury his father. | | After he had buried his father, Joseph returned to Egypt with his brothers and all who had gone up with him to bury his father.
And when the brethren of Joseph saw that their father was dead, they said, [Let us take heed], lest at any time Joseph remember evil against us, and recompense to us all the evils which we have done against him. | Joseph reassures his brothers. Gn.50.15-21 | When Joseph's brothers saw that their father was dead, they said, "It may be that Joseph will hate us and pay us back for all the evil which we did to him."
And they came to Joseph, and said, Your father adjured [us] before his death, saying, | | So they sent a message to Joseph, saying, "Your father gave this command before he died, | וַיְצַוּוּ אֶל־יֹוסֵף לֵאמֹר אָבִיךָ צִוָּה לִפְנֵי מֹותֹו לֵאמֹר׃ |
16 |
Thus say you to Joseph, Forgive them their injustice and their sin, forasmuch as they have done you evil; and now pardon the injustice of the servants of the God of your father. And Joseph wept while they spoke to him. | | 'Say to Joseph, Forgive, I pray you, the transgression of your brothers and their sin, because they did evil to you.' And now, we pray you, forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father." Joseph wept when they spoke to him.
And they came to him and said, We, these [persons], are your servants. | | His brothers also came and fell down before him, and said, "Behold, we are your servants."
And Joseph said to them, Fear not, for I am God's. | | But Joseph said to them, "Fear not, for am I in the place of God?
Ye took counsel against me for evil, but God took counsel for me for good, that [the matter] might be as [it is] to-day, and much people might be fed. | | As for you, you meant evil against me; but God meant it for good, to bring it about that many people should be kept alive, as they are today.
And he said to them, Fear not, I will maintain you, and your families: and he comforted them, and spoke kindly to them. | | So do not fear; I will provide for you and your little ones." Thus he reassured them and comforted them.
And Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his brethren, and all the family of his father; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years. | Joseph's death. Gn.50.22-26 | So Joseph dwelt in Egypt, he and his father's house; and Joseph lived a hundred and ten years.
And Joseph saw the children of Ephraim to the third generation; and the sons of Machir the son of Manasse were borne on the sides of Joseph. | | And Joseph saw E'phraim's children of the third generation; the children also of Machir the son of Manas'seh were born upon Joseph's knees.
And Joseph spoke to his brethren, saying, I die, and God will surely visit you, and will bring you out of this land to the land concerning which God sware to our fathers, Abraam, Isaac, and Jacob. | | And Joseph said to his brothers, "I am about to die; but God will visit you, and bring you up out of this land to the land which he swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob."
And Joseph adjured the sons of Israel, saying, At the visitation with which God shall visit you, then you shall carry up my bones hence with you. | | Then Joseph took an oath of the sons of Israel, saying, "God will visit you, and you shall carry up my bones from here."
And Joseph died, aged an hundred and ten years; and they prepared his corpse, and put him in a coffin in Egypt. | | So Joseph died, being a hundred and ten years old; and they embalmed him, and he was put in a coffin in Egypt.
