katapi HOME The Request of James and John - Mk.10.35-45  Mt.20.20-28       | NEB Books | notes

Mark: 10
35James and John, the sons of Zebedee, approached him and said, 'Master, we should like you to do us a favour.' 36'What is it you want me to do?' he asked. 37They answered, 'Grant us the right to sit in state with you, one at your right and the other at your left.' 38Jesus said to them, 'You do not understand what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?' 39'We can', they answered. Jesus said, 'The cup that I drink you shall drink, and the baptism I am baptized with shall be your baptism; 40but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant; it is for those to whom it has already been assigned.' [Some witnesses add: by my Father.]
41When the other ten heard this, they were indignant with James and John. 42Jesus called them to him and said, 'You know that in the world the recognized rulers lord it over their subjects, and their great men make them feel the weight of authority. 43That is not the way with you; among you, whoever wants to be great must be your servant, 44and whoever wants to be first must be the willing slave of all. 45For even the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve, and to surrender his life as a ransom for many.'

Matthew: 20
20The mother of Zebedee's sons then came before him, with her sons. She bowed low and begged a favour. 21'What is it you wish?' asked Jesus. 'I want you', she said, 'to give orders that in your kingdom my two sons here may sit next to you, one at your right, and the other at your left.' 22Jesus turned to the brothers and said, 'You do not understand what you are asking. Can you drink the cup that I am to drink?' We can', they replied. 23Then he said to them, 'You shall indeed share my cup; but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant; it is for those to whom it has already been assigned by my Father.'
24When the other ten heard this, they were indignant with the two brothers. 25So Jesus called them to him and said, 'You know that in the world, rulers lord it over their subjects, and their great men make them feel the weight of authority; 26but it shall not be so with you. Among you, whoever wants to be great must be your servant, 27and whoever would be first must be the willing slave of all— 28like the Son of Man; he did not come to be served, but to serve, and to surrender his life as a ransom for many.'

Notes: The most generally known harmonies of the Gospels are based upon the Huck-Lietzmann Synopsis (1936) of the three gospels and Sparks' Synopsis (1964) of four gospels. Many of the passages in these harmonies are too short to display in a useful manner on a web-page.
The katapi New Study Bible Synopsis of the Gospels is based upon the headings displayed in the New Study Bible reference table which in turn follows the headings printed in the United Bible Societies' New Testament in Greek. These sections are more useful for bible study. Columns are arranged so that the first column is your chosen heading from the bible passage list (highlighted). The harmonies that follow across the web-page are then in the normally accepted order.
For Old Testament references quoted by New Testament authors, you should either go back to the passage listing web-page and select the link on the 'version' column; or click on the column heading and search through the chapter for the relevant passage; than select the OT passage from the reference column.
