katapi HOME The Healing of the Gadarene Demoniacs - Lk.8.26-39  Mt.8.28-34  Mk.5.1-20     | NEB Books | notes

Luke: 8
26So they landed in the country of the Gergesenes, [Some witnesses read: Gerasenes; others read: Gadarenes.] which is opposite Galilee.

Matthew: 8
28When he reached the other side, in the country of the Gadarenes, he was met by two men who came out from the tombs; they were possessed by devils, and so violent that no one dared pass that way. 29'You son of God,' they shouted, 'what do you want with us? Have you come here to torment us before our time?' 30In the distance a large herd of pigs was feeding; 31and the devils begged him: 'If you drive us out, send us into that herd of pigs.' 32'Begone', he said. Then they came out and went into the pigs; the whole herd rushed over the edge into the lake, and perished in the water.
33The men in charge of them took to their heels, and made for the town, where they told the whole story, and what had happened to the madmen. 34Thereupon the whole town came out to meet Jesus; and when they saw him they begged him to leave the district and go.

Mark: 5
1So they came to the other side of the lake, into the country of the Gerasenes. 2As he stepped ashore, a man possessed by an unclean spirit came up to him from among the tombs where he had his dwelling. 3He could no longer be controlled; even chains were useless; he had often been fettered and chained up, 4but he had snapped his chains and broken the fetters. No one was strong enough to master him. 5And so, unceasingly, night and day, he would cry aloud among the tombs and on the hill-sides and cut himself with stones. 6When he saw Jesus in the distance, he ran and flung himself down before him, 7shouting loudly, 'What do you want with me, Jesus, son of the Most High God? In God's name do not torment me.' 8(For Jesus was already saying to him, 'Out, unclean spirit, come out of this man!') 9Jesus asked him, 'What is your name?' 'My name is Legion,' he said, 'there are so many of us.' 10And he begged hard that Jesus would not send them out of the country.
11Now there happened to be a large herd of pigs feeding on the hill-side, 12and the spirits begged him, 'Send us among the pigs and let us go into them.' 13He gave them leave; and the unclean spirits came out and went into the pigs; and the herd, of about two thousand, rushed over the edge into the lake and were drowned. 14The men in charge of them took to their heels and carried the news to the town and country-side; and the people came out to see what had happened. 15They came to Jesus and saw the madman who had been possessed by the legion of devils, sitting there clothed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 16The spectators told them how the madman had been cured and what had happened to the pigs. 17Then they begged Jesus to leave the district. 18As he was stepping into the boat, the man who had been possessed begged to go with him. 19Jesus would not allow it, but said to him, 'Go home to your own folk and tell them what the Lord in his mercy has done for you.' 20The man went off and spread the news in the Ten Towns [Greek: Decapolis.] of all that Jesus had done for him, and they were all amazed.

Notes: The most generally known harmonies of the Gospels are based upon the Huck-Lietzmann Synopsis (1936) of the three gospels and Sparks' Synopsis (1964) of four gospels. Many of the passages in these harmonies are too short to display in a useful manner on a web-page.
The katapi New Study Bible Synopsis of the Gospels is based upon the headings displayed in the New Study Bible reference table which in turn follows the headings printed in the United Bible Societies' New Testament in Greek. These sections are more useful for bible study. Columns are arranged so that the first column is your chosen heading from the bible passage list (highlighted). The harmonies that follow across the web-page are then in the normally accepted order.
For Old Testament references quoted by New Testament authors, you should either go back to the passage listing web-page and select the link on the 'version' column; or click on the column heading and search through the chapter for the relevant passage; than select the OT passage from the reference column.
