katapi HOME Temptations to Sin - Mt.18.5-9  Mk.9.42-48  Lk.17.1-2     | RSV Books | notes

Matthew: 18
5"Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me; 6but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin [Greek: causes ... to stumble], it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. 7"Woe to the world for temptations to sin! [Greek: stumbling blocks] For it is necessary that temptations come, but woe to the man by whom the temptation comes! 8And if your hand or your foot causes you to sin [Greek: causes ... to stumble], cut it off and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life maimed or lame than with two hands or two feet to be thrown into the eternal fire. 9And if your eye causes you to sin [Greek: causes ... to stumble], pluck it out and throw it away; it is better for you to enter life with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into the hell [Greek: Gehenna] of fire.

Mark: 9
42"Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin [Greek: stumble], it would be better for him if a great millstone were hung round his neck and he were thrown into the sea. 43And if your hand causes you to sin [Greek: stumble], cut it off; it is better for you to enter life maimed than with two hands to go to hell [Greek: Gehenna], to the unquenchable fire. 44 [Verses 44 and 46 (which are identical with verse 48) are omitted by the best ancient authorities] [where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.] 45And if your foot causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter life lame than with two feet to be thrown into hell [Greek: Gehenna]. 46 [Verses 44 and 46 (which are identical with verse 48) are omitted by the best ancient authorities] 47And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out; it is better for you to enter the kingdom of God with one eye than with two eyes to be thrown into hell [Greek: Gehenna], 48where their worm does not die, and the fire is not quenched.

Luke: 17
1And he said to his disciples, "Temptations to sin [Greek: stumbling blocks] are sure to come; but woe to him by whom they come! 2It would be better for him if a millstone were hung round his neck and he were cast into the sea, than that he should cause one of these little ones to sin [Greek: stimble].
