katapi HOME The Question about David's Son - Mk.12.35-37  Mt.22.41-46  Lk.20.41-44     | RSV Books | notes

Mark: 12
35And as Jesus taught in the temple, he said, "How can the scribes say that the Christ is the son of David? 36David himself, inspired by [Or: himself, in] the Holy Spirit, declared,

'The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
till I put thy enemies under thy feet.' 37David himself calls him Lord; so how is he his son?" And the great throng heard him gladly.

Matthew: 22
41Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, 42saying, "What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." 43He said to them, "How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit [Or: David in the Spirit], calls him Lord, saying, 44'The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
till I put thy enemies under thy feet'? 45If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?" 46And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did any one dare to ask him any more questions.

Luke: 20
41But he said to them, "How can they say that the Christ is David's son? 42For David himself says in the Book of Psalms,

'The Lord said to my Lord,
Sit at my right hand,
43till I make thy enemies a stool for thy feet.' 44David thus calls him Lord; so how is he his son?"
