 Revised Standard Version<< Matthew:19 >>Novum Testamentum Graece (UBS.Ed.26)

Now when Jesus had finished these sayings, he went away from Galilee and entered the region of Judea beyond the Jordan; Teaching about Divorce Mt.19.1-12 (Borders of Samaria) - | Mk.10.1-12Καὶ ἐγένετο ὅτε ἐτέλεσεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τοὺς λόγους τούτους, μετῆρεν ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς τὰ ὁρια τῆς Ἰουδαίας πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου.
and large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.
And Pharisees came up to him and tested him by asking, "Is it lawful to divorce one's wife for any cause?"  Καὶ προσῆλθον αὐτῷ Φαρισαῖοι πειράζοντες αὐτὸν καὶ λέγοντες, Εἰ ἐξεστιν ἀνθρώπῳ ἀπολῦσαι τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ κατὰ πᾶσαν αἰτίαν;
He answered, "Have you not read that he who made them from the beginning made them male and female, - he made them male and female Mt.19.4 | Gn.1.27 | Gn.5.2ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν, Οὐκ ἀνέγνωτε ὅτι ὁ κτίσας ἀπ' ἀρχῆς ἄρσεν καὶ θῆλυ ἐποίησεν αὐτούσ;
and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'? - and the two shall become one flesh Mt.19.5 | Gn.2.24καὶ εἶπεν, Ἕνεκα τούτου καταλείψει ἄνθρωπος τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα καὶ κολληθήσεται τῇ γυναικὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔσονται οἱ δύο εἰς σάρκα μίαν.
So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man put asunder."
They said to him, "Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce, and to put her away?" - a certificate of divorce Mt.19.7 | Dt.24.1λέγουσιν αὐτῷ, Τί οὖν Μωϋσῆς ἐνετείλατο δοῦναι βιβλίον ἀποστασίου καὶ ἀπολῦσαι [αὐτήν];
He said to them, "For your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so.
And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for unchastity [Other ancient authorities, after unchastity, read: makes her commit adultery], and marries another, commits adultery. [Other ancient authorities insert: and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery]"  λέγω δὲ ὑμῖν ὅτι ὃς ἂν ἀπολύσῃ τὴν γυναῖκα αὐτοῦ μὴ ἐπὶ πορνείᾳ καὶ γαμήσῃ ἀλλην μοιχᾶται.
The disciples said to him, "If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is not expedient to marry."
But he said to them, "Not all men can receive [this] saying, but only those to whom it is given.
For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. He who is able to receive this, let him receive it."
Then children were brought to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. The disciples rebuked the people; Little Children Blessed Mt.19.13-15 (Borders of Samaria) - | Mk.10.13-16 | Lk.18.15-17Τότε προσηνέχθησαν αὐτῷ παιδία, ἵνα τὰς χεῖρας ἐπιθῇ αὐτοῖς καὶ προσεύξηται· οἱ δὲ μαθηταὶ ἐπετίμησαν αὐτοῖς.
but Jesus said, "Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them; for to such belongs the kingdom of heaven."
And he laid his hands on them and went away.
And behold, one came up to him, saying, "Teacher, what good deed must I do, to have eternal life?" The Rich Young Man Mt.19.16-30 | Mk.10.17-31 | Lk.18.18-30Καὶ ἰδοὺ εἷς προσελθὼν αὐτῷ εἶπεν, Διδάσκαλε, τί ἀγαθὸν ποιήσω ἵνα σχῶ ζωὴν αἰώνιον;
And he said to him, "Why do you ask me about what is good? One there is who is good. If you would enter life, keep the commandments."
He said to him, "Which?" And Jesus said, "You shall not kill, You shall not commit adultery, You shall not steal, You shall not bear false witness, - You shall not kill Mt.19.18 | Ex.20.12-16 | Dt.5.16λέγει αὐτῷ, Ποίας; ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν, τὸ οὐ φονεύσεις, οὐ μοιχεύσεις, οὐ κλέψεις, οὐ ψευδομαρτυρήσεις,
Honor your father and mother, and, You shall love your neighbor as yourself." - Honour your father and mother Mt.19.19 | Lv.19.18Τίμα τὸν πατέρα καὶ τὴν μητέρα, καὶ Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν.
The young man said to him, "All these I have observed; what do I still lack?"  λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ νεανίσκος, Πάντα ταῦτα ἐφύλαξα· τί ἐτι ὑστερῶ;
Jesus said to him, "If you would be perfect, go, sell what you possess and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me."
When the young man heard this he went away sorrowful; for he had great possessions.
And Jesus said to his disciples, "Truly, I say to you, it will be hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven.
Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God."
When the disciples heard this they were greatly astonished, saying, "Who then can be saved?"  ἀκούσαντες δὲ οἱ μαθηταὶ ἐξεπλήσσοντο σφόδρα λέγοντες, Τίς ἀρα δύναται σωθῆναὶ;
But Jesus looked at them and said to them, "With men this is impossible, but with God all things are possible."
Then Peter said in reply, "Lo, we have left everything and followed you. What then shall we have?"  Τότε ἀποκριθεὶς ὁ Πέτρος εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Ἰδοὺ ἡμεῖς ἀφήκαμεν πάντα καὶ ἠκολουθήσαμέν σοι· τί ἀρα ἐσται ἡμῖν;
Jesus said to them, "Truly, I say to you, in the new world, when the Son of man shall sit on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.
And every one who has left houses or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name's sake, will receive a hundredfold [Other ancient authorities read: manifold], and inherit eternal life.
But many that are there first will be last, and the last first.
