Therfor long strijf was maad bitwixe the hows of Dauid and bitwixe the hows of Saul; and Dauid profitide and euere was strongere than hym silf, forsothe the hows of Saul decreesside ech dai. Now there was a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: David prospering and growing always stronger and stronger, but the house of Saul decaying daily. Abner & Ishbosheth quarrel. 2Sm.3.1-16
Natique sunt filii David in Hebron: fuitque primogenitus ejus Amnon, de Achinoam Jezraëlitide. And sones weren borne to Dauid in Ebron; and his firste gendrid sone was Amon, of Achynoem of Jezrael; And sons were born to David in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon of Achinoam the Jezrahelitess:
Et post eum Cheleab, de Abigail uxore Nabal Carmeli: porro tertius Absalom, filius Maacha filiæ Tholmai regis Gessur. and aftir hym was Celeab, of Abigail, wijf of Nabal of Carmele; sotheli the thrydde was Absolon, the sone of Maacha, douytir of Tholomay, kyng of Gessur; And his second Cheleab of Abigail the wife of Nabal of Carmel: and the third Absalom the son of Maacha the daughter of Tholmai king of Gessur:
Quartus autem Adonias, filius Haggith: et quintus Saphathia, filius Abital. forsothe the fourthe was Adonyas, the sone of Agith; and the fyuethe was Saphacias, the sone of Abitail; and the sixte was Gethraam of Egla, And the fourth Adonias, the son of Haggith: and the fifth Saphathia the son of Abital:
Sextus quoque Jethraam, de Egla uxore David: hi nati sunt David in Hebron. the wijf of Dauid. These weren borne to Dauid in Ebron. And the sixth Jethraam of Egla the wife of David: these were born to David in Hebron.
Therfor whanne batel was bytwixe the hows of Saul and the hows of Dauid, Abner, the sone of Ner, gouernyde the hows of Saul. Now while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner the son of Ner ruled the house of Saul.
Fuerat autem Sauli concubina nomine Respha, filia Aja. Dixitque Isboseth ad Abner: Sotheli a concubyn, that is, a secoundarie wijf, Respha bi name, the douytir of Achia, was to Saul; and Abner entride to hir. And Saul had a concubine named Respha, the daughter of Aia. And Isboseth said to Abner:
Quare ingressus es ad concubinam patris mei ? Qui iratus nimis propter verba Isboseth, ait : Numquid caput canis ego sum adversum Judam hodie, qui fecerim misericordiam super domum Saul patris tui, et super fratres et proximos ejus, et non tradidi te in manus David, et tu requisisti in me quod argueres pro muliere hodie ? And Isbosech seide to Abner, Whi entridist thou to the concubyn of my fadir? Which was wrooth greetli for the wordis of Isbosech, and seide, Whether Y am the heed of a dogge ayens Juda to dai, and Y have do merci on the hous of Saul, thi fadir, and on hise britheren, and neiyboris, and Y bitook not thee in to the hondis of David, and thou hast souyt in me that, that thou schuldist repreue me for a womman to dai? Why didst thou go in to my father's concubine? And he was exceedingly angry for the words of Isboseth, and said: Am I a dog's head against Juda this day, who have shewn mercy to the house of Saul thy father, and to his brethren and friends, and have not delivered thee into the hands of David, and hast thou sought this day against me to charge me with a matter concerning a woman?
Hæc faciat Deus Abner, et hæc addat ei, nisi quomodo juravit Dominus David, sic faciam cum eo, God do these thingis to Abner, and adde these thingis to hym, no but as the Lord swoor to Dauid, so Y do with hym, So do God to Abner, and more also, unless as the Lord hath sworn to David, so I do to him,
ut transferatur regnum de domo Saul, et elevetur thronus David super Israël et super Judam, a Dan usque Bersabee. that the rewme be translatid fro the hous of Saul, and the trone of Dauid be reisid on Israel and on Juda, fro Dan til to Bersabee. That the kingdom be translated from the house of Saul, and the throne of David be set up over Israel, and over Juda from Dan to Bersabee.
And Isbosech myyte not answere ony thing to Abner, for he dredde Abner. And he could not answer him a word, because he feared him.
Therfor Abner sente messangeris to Dauid, and thei seiden for hym, Whos is the lond? and that the messangeris schulden speke, Make thou frenschipis with me, and myn hond schal be with thee, and Y schal brynge al Israel to thee. Abner therefore sent messengers to David for himself, saying: Whose is the land? and that they should say: Make a league with me, and my hand shall be with thee: and I will bring all Israel to thee.
Qui ait : Optime : ego faciam tecum amicitias : sed unam rem peto a te, dicens : Non videbis faciem meam antequam adduxeris Michol filiam Saul : et sic venies, et videbis me. And Dauid seide, Best Y schal make frenschipis with thee, but Y axe of thee o thing, and seie, Thou schalt not se my face, bifore that thou brynge Mycol, the douyter of Saul, and so thou schalt come, and schalt se me. And he said: Very well: I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, saying: Thou shalt not see my face before thou bring Michol the daughter of Saul: and so thou shalt come, and see me.
Therfor Dauid sente messangeris to Isbosech, the sone of Saul, and seide, Yelde thou my wijf Mycol, whom Y spouside to me for an hundryd prepucies of Filisteis. And David sent messengers to Isboseth the son of Saul, saying: Restore my wife Michol, whom I espoused to me for a hundred foreskins of the Philistines.
Misit ergo Isboseth, et tulit eam a viro suo Phaltiel filio Lais. Therfor Isbosech sente, and took hir fro hir hosebonde, Faltiel, son of Lais; And Isboseth sent, and took her from her husband Phaltiel, the son of Lais.
Qui reversus est. and hir hosebonde suede hir and wepte til Bahurym. And Abner seide to hym, Go thou, and turne ayen; and he turnede ayen. And her husband followed her, weeping as far as Bahurim: and Abner said to him: Go and return. And he returned.
