1Respondens autem Baldad Suhites, dixit: Sotheli Baldath Suytes answeride, and seide, The Baldad the Suhite answered, and said: Bildad. Jb.8.1-22
2Usquequo loqueris talia,
et spiritus multiplex sermones oris tui?
Hou longe schalt thou speke siche thingis?
The spirit of the word of thi mouth is manyfold.
How long wilt thou speak these things,
and how long shall the words of thy mouth be like a strong wind?
 
3Numquid Deus supplantat judicium?
aut Omnipotens subvertit quod justum est?
Whether God supplauntith,
ethir disseyueth, doom, and whether Almyyti God distrieth that, that is iust?
Doth God pervert judgment,
or doth the Almighty overthrow that which is just?
 
4Etiam si filii tui peccaverunt ei,
et dimisit eos in manu iniquitatis suæ:
Yhe, thouy thi sones synneden ayens hym,
and he lefte hem in the hond of her wickidnesse;
Although thy children have sinned against him,
and he hath left them in the hand of their iniquity:
 
5tu tamen si diluculo consurrexeris ad Deum,
et Omnipotentem fueris deprecatus;
netheles, if thou risist eerli to God,
and bisechist Almyyti God,
Yet if thou wilt arise early to God,
and wilt beseech the Almighty:
 
6si mundus et rectus incesseris:
statim evigilabit ad te,
et pacatum reddet habitaculum justitiæ tuæ,
if thou goist clene and riytful,
anoon he schal wake fulli to thee,
and schal make pesible the dwellyng place of thi ryytfulnesse;
If thou wilt walk clean and upright,
he will presently awake onto thee,
and will make the dwelling of thy justice peaceable:
 
7in tantum ut si priora tua fuerint parva,
et novissima tua multiplicentur nimis.
in so miche that thi formere thingis weren litil,
and that thi laste thingis be multiplied greetli.
Insomuch, that if thy former things were small,
thy latter things would be multiplied exceedingly.
 
8Interroga enim generationem pristinam,
et diligenter investiga patrum memoriam
For whi, axe thou the formere generacioun,
and seke thou diligentli the mynde of fadris.
For inquire of the former generation,
and search diligently into the memory of the fathers:
 
9(hesterni quippe sumus, et ignoramus,
quoniam sicut umbra dies nostri sunt super terram),
For we ben men of yistirdai, and kunnen not;
for oure daies ben as schadewe on the erthe.
(For we are but of yesterday, and are ignorant
that our days upon earth are but a shadow:)
 
10et ipsi docebunt te, loquentur tibi,
et de corde suo proferent eloquia.
And thei schulen teche thee, thei schulen speke to thee,
and of her herte thei schulen bring forth spechis.
And they shall teach thee: they shall speak to thee,
and utter words out of their hearts.
 
11Numquid vivere potest scirpus absque humore?
aut crescere carectum sine aqua?
Whether a rusche may lyue with out moysture?
ethir a spier may wexe with out watir?
Can the rush be green without moisture?
or a sedge-bush grow without water?
 
12Cum adhuc sit in flore, nec carpatur manu,
ante omnes herbas arescit.
Whanne it is yit in the flour,
nethir is takun with hond,
it wexeth drie bifor alle erbis.
When it is yet in flower, and is not plucked up with the hand,
it withereth before all herbs.
 
13Sic viæ omnium qui obliviscuntur Deum,
et spes hypocritæ peribit.
So the weies of alle men,
that foryeten God;
and the hope of an ypocrite schal perische.
Even so are the ways of all that forget God,
and the hope of the hypocrite shall perish:
 
14Non ei placebit vecordia sua,
et sicut tela aranearum fiducia ejus.
His cowardise schal not plese hym,
and his trist schal be as a web of yreyns.
His folly shall not please him,
and his trust shall be like the spider's web.
 
15Innitetur super domum suam, et non stabit;
fulciet eam, et non consurget.
He schal leene, ether reste, on his hows, and it schal not stonde;
he schal vndursette it, and it schal not rise togidere.
He shall lean upon his house, and it shall not stand:
he shall prop it up, and it shall not rise:
 
16Humectus videtur antequam veniat sol,
et in ortu suo germen ejus egredietur.
The rusche semeth moist, bifor that the sunne come;
and in the risyng of the sunne the seed therof schal go out.
He seemeth to have moisture before the sun cometh,
and at his rising his blossom shall shoot forth.
 
17Super acervum petrarum radices ejus densabuntur,
et inter lapides commorabitur.
Rootis therof schulen be maad thicke on an heep of stoonys,
and it schal dwelle among stoonys.
His roots shall be thick upon a heap of stones,
and among the stones he shall abide.
 
18Si absorbuerit eum de loco suo,
negabit eum, et dicet: Non novi te.
If a man drawith it out of his place,
his place schal denye it, and schal seie, Y knowe thee not.
If one swallow him up out of his place,
he shall deny him, and shall say: I know thee not.
 
19Hæc est enim lætitia viæ ejus,
ut rursum de terra alii germinentur.
For this is the gladnesse of his weie,
that eft othere ruschis springe out of the erthe.
For this is the joy of his way,
that others may spring again out of the earth.
 
20Deus non projiciet simplicem,
nec porriget manum malignis,
Forsothe God schal not caste a wei a symple man,
nethir schal dresse hond to wickid men;
God will not cast away the simple,
nor reach out his hand to the evildoer:
 
21donec impleatur risu os tuum,
et labia tua jubilo.
til thi mouth be fillid with leiytir,
and thi lippis with hertli song.
Until thy mouth be filled with laughter,
and thy lips with rejoicing.
 
22Qui oderunt te induentur confusione,
et tabernaculum impiorum non subsistet.
Thei that haten thee schulen be clothid with schenschip;
and the tabernacle of wickid men schal not stonde.
They that hate thee, shall be clothed with confusion:
and the dwelling of the wicked shall not stand.
