| 1 | Locutusque est Dominus ad Moysen et Aaron, dicens: |
And the Lord spak to Moises and to Aaron, |
And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying: | The red heifer. Nu.19.1-10 |
| 2 | Ista est religio victimæ, quam constituit Dominus. Præcipe filiis Israël, ut adducant ad te vaccam rufam ætatis integræ, in qua nulla sit macula, nec portaverit jugum: |
and seide, This is the religioun of sacrifice, which the Lord ordeynede. Comaunde thou to the sones of Israel, that thei brynge to thee a reed cow of hool age, in which is no wem, nether sche hath bore yok. |
This is the observance of the victim, which the Lord hath ordained. Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee a red cow of full age, in which there is no blemish, and which hath not carried the yoke: | |
| 3 | tradetisque eam Eleazaro sacerdoti, qui eductam extra castra, immolabit in conspectu omnium: |
And ye schulen bitake hir to Eleazar, preest, which schal offre the cow, led out of the tentis, in the siyt of alle men. |
And you shall deliver her to Eleazar the priest, who shall bring her forth without the camp, and shall immolate her in the sight of all: | |
| 4 | et tingens digitum in sanguine ejus, asperget contra fores tabernaculi septem vicibus, |
And he schal dippe his fyngur in the blood therof, and schal sprynge seuene sithis ayens the yatis of the tabernacle. |
And dipping his finger in her blood, shall sprinkle it over against the door of the tabernacle seven times, | |
| 5 | comburetque eam cunctis videntibus, tam pelle et carnibus ejus quam sanguine et fimo flammæ traditis. |
And he schal brenne that cow, while alle men sien; and he schal yyue as wel the skyn and fleischis therof as the blood and dung to flawme. |
And shall burn her in the sight of all, delivering up to the fire her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, and her dung. | |
| 6 | Lignum quoque cedrinum, et hyssopum, coccumque bis tinctum sacerdos mittet in flammam, quæ vaccam vorat. |
Also the preest schal sende a tre of cedre, and ysope, and reed threed died twies, into the flawme that deuourith the cow. |
The priest shall also take cedar wood, and hyssop, and scarlet twice dyed, and cast it into the flame, with which the cow is consumed. | |
| 7 | Et tunc demum, lotis vestibus et corpore suo, ingredietur in castra, commaculatusque erit usque ad vesperum. |
And thanne at the laste, whanne hise clothis and bodi ben waischun, he schal entre in to the tentis, and he schal be defoulid til to euentid. |
And then after washing his garments, and body, he shall enter into the camp, and shall be unclean until the evening. | |
| 8 | Sed et ille qui combusserit eam, lavabit vestimenta sua et corpus, et immundus erit usque ad vesperum. |
But also he that brente the cow, schal waische hise clothis, and bodi, and he schal be vncleene til to euentid. |
He also that hath burned her, shall wash his garments, and his body, and shall be unclean until the evening. | |
| 9 | Colliget autem vir mundus cineres vaccæ, et effundet eos extra castra in loco purissimo, ut sint multitudini filiorum Israël in custodiam, et in aquam aspersionis: quia pro peccato vacca combusta est. |
Forsothe a cleene man schal gadere the aischis of the cow, and schal schede out tho with out the tentis, in a place moost cleene, that tho be to the multitude of the sones of Israel in to keping, and in to watir of spryngyng; for the cow is brent for synne. |
And a man that is clean shall gather up the ashes of the cow, and shall pour them forth without the camp in a most clean place, that they may be reserved for the multitude of the children of Israel, and for a water of aspersion: because the cow was burnt for sin. | |
| 10 | Cumque laverit qui vaccæ portaverat cineres vestimenta sua, immundus erit usque ad vesperum. Habebunt hoc filii Israël, et advenæ qui habitant inter eos, sanctum jure perpetuo. |
And whanne he that bar the aischis of the cow, hath waische hise clothis, he schal be vncleene til to euentid. And the sones of Israel, and comelyngis that dwellen among hem, schulen haue this hooli bi euerlastynge lawe. |
And when he that carried the ashes of the cow, hath washed his garments, he shall be unclean until the evening. The children of Israel, and the strangers that dwell among them, shall observe this for a holy thing by a perpetual ordinance. | |
