Luke

Reference
IN THOSE DAYS a decree was issued by the Emperor Augustus for a general registration throughout the Roman world.The Birth of Jesus Lk.2.1-7 | Mt.1.18-25
This was the first registration of its kind; it took place when Quirinius was governor of Syria.
3καὶ ἐπορεύοντο πάντες ἀπογράφεσθαι, ἑκαστος εἰς τὴν ἑαυτοῦ πόλιν. For this purpose everyone made his way to his own town;
4Ἀνέβη δὲ καὶ Ἰωσὴφ ἀπὸ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ἐκ πόλεως Ναζαρὲθ εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν εἰς πόλιν Δαυὶδ ἡτις καλεῖται Βηθλέεμ, διὰ τὸ εἶναι αὐτὸν ἐξ οἰκου καὶ πατριᾶς Δαυίδ, (4-5) and so Joseph went up to Judaea from the town of Nazareth in Galilee, to be registered at the city of David, called Bethlehem, because he was of the house of David by descent;
5ἀπογράψασθαι σὺν Μαριὰμ τῇ ἐμνηστευμένῃ αὐτῷ, οὐσῃ ἐγκύῳ. and with him went Mary who was betrothed to him. She was pregnant,
6ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ εἶναι αὐτοὺς ἐκεῖ ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ τεκεῖν αὐτήν, and while they were there the time came for her child to be born,
7καὶ ἐτεκεν τὸν υἱὸν αὐτῆς τὸν πρωτότοκον· καὶ ἐσπαργάνωσεν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀνέκλινεν αὐτὸν ἐν φάτνῃ, διότι οὐκ ἦν αὐτοῖς τόπος ἐν τῷ καταλύματι. and she gave birth to a son, her first-born. She wrapped him round, and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them to lodge in the house.
Now in this same district there were shepherds out in the fields, keeping watch through the night over their flock,The Shepherds and the Angels Lk.2.8-21
9καὶ ἀγγελος κυρίου ἐπέστη αὐτοῖς καὶ δόξα κυρίου περιέλαμψεν αὐτούς, καὶ ἐφοβήθησαν φόβον μέγαν. when suddenly there stood before them an angel of the Lord, and the splendour of the Lord shone round them.
10καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ ἀγγελος, Μὴ φοβεῖσθε, ἰδοὺ γὰρ εὐαγγελίζομαι ὑμῖν χαρὰν μεγάλην ἡτις ἐσται παντὶ τῷ λαῷ, They were terror-struck, but the angel said, 'Do not be afraid; I have good news for you: there is great joy coming to the whole people.
11ὁτι ἐτέχθη ὑμῖν σήμερον σωτὴρ ὁς ἐστιν Χριστὸς κύριος ἐν πόλει Δαυίδ· Today in the city of David a deliverer has been born to you - the Messiah, the Lord.
And this is your sign: you will find a baby lying all wrapped up, in a manger.'
13καὶ ἐξαίφνης ἐγένετο σὺν τῷ ἀγγέλῳ πλῆθος στρατιᾶς οὐρανίου αἰνούντων τὸν θεὸν καὶ λεγόντων, All at once there was with the angel a great company of the heavenly host, singing the praises of God:
14

'Glory to God in highest heaven,
And on earth his peace for men on whom his favour rests.

After the angels had left them and gone into heaven the shepherds said to one another, 'Come, we must go straight to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.'
16καὶ ἦλθαν σπεύσαντες καὶ ἀνεῦραν τήν τε Μαριὰμ καὶ τὸν Ἰωσὴφ καὶ τὸ βρέφος κείμενον ἐν τῇ φάτνῃ· So they went with all speed and found their way to Mary and Joseph; and the baby was lying in the manger.
17ἰδόντες δὲ ἐγνώρισαν περὶ τοῦ ῥήματος τοῦ λαληθέντος αὐτοῖς περὶ τοῦ παιδίου τούτου. When they saw him, they recounted what they had been told about this child;
18καὶ πάντες οἱ ἀκούσαντες ἐθαύμασαν περὶ τῶν λαληθέντων ὑπὸ τῶν ποιμένων πρὸς αὐτούς· and all who heard is were astonished at what the shepherds said.
But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered over them.
Meanwhile the shepherds returned glorifying and praising God for what they had heard and seen; it had all happened as they had been told.

Eight days later the time came to circumcise him, and he was given the name Jesus, the name given by the angel before he was conceived.

22Καὶ ὅτε ἐπλήσθησαν αἱ ἡμέραι τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ αὐτῶν κατὰ τὸν νόμον Μωϋσέως, ἀνήγαγον αὐτὸν εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα παραστῆσαι τῷ κυρίῳ, Then, after their purification had been completed in accordance with the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the LordThe Presentation of Jesus in the Temple Lk.2.22-38
23καθὼς γέγραπται ἐν νόμῳ κυρίου ὅτι πᾶν ἄρσεν διανοῖγον μήτραν ἅγιον τῷ κυρίῳ κληθήσεται, (as prescribed in the law of the Lord: 'Every first-born male shall be deemed to belong to the Lord'),- Every male that opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord Lk.2.23 | Lv.12.3
24καὶ τοῦ δοῦναι θυσίαν κατὰ τὸ εἰρημένον ἐν τῷ νόμῳ κυρίου, ζεῦγος τρυγόνων ἢ δύο νοσσοὺς περιστερῶν. and also to make the offering as stated in the law of the Lord: 'A pair of turtle doves or two young pigeons.'
- To offer Lk.2.24 | Ex.13.2-15
25Καὶ ἰδοὺ ἄνθρωπος ἦν ἐν Ἰερουσαλὴμ ᾧ ὀνομα Συμεών, καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος δίκαιος καὶ εὐλαβής, προσδεχόμενος παράκλησιν τοῦ Ἰσραήλ, καὶ πνεῦμα ἦν ἀγιον ἐπ' αὐτόν· There was at that time in Jerusalem a man called Simeon. This man was upright and devout, one who watched and waited for the restoration of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him.
It had been disclosed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death until he had seen the Lord's Messiah.
27καὶ ἦλθεν ἐν τῷ πνεύματι εἰς τὸ ἱερόν· καὶ ἐν τῷ εἰσαγαγεῖν τοὺς γονεῖς τὸ παιδίον Ἰησοῦν τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτοὺς κατὰ τὸ εἰθισμένον τοῦ νόμου περὶ αὐτοῦ Guided by the Spirit he came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus to do for him what was customary under the Law,
28καὶ αὐτὸς ἐδέξατο αὐτὸ εἰς τὰς ἀγκάλας καὶ εὐλόγησεν τὸν θεὸν καὶ εἶπεν, he took him in his arms, praised God, and said:
'This day, Master, thou givest thy servant his discharge in peace;
now thy promise is fulfilled.
Song of Simeon Odes.12.29-32 |
For I have seen with my own eyes

the deliverance which thou hast made ready
in full view of all the nations:

A light that will be a revelation to the heathen,
and glory to thy people Israel.'

The child's father and mother were full of wonder at what was being said about him.
34καὶ εὐλόγησεν αὐτοὺς Συμεὼν καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς Μαριὰμ τὴν μητέρα αὐτοῦ, Ἰδοὺ οὗτος κεῖται εἰς πτῶσιν καὶ ἀνάστασιν πολλῶν ἐν τῷ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ εἰς σημεῖον ἀντιλεγόμενον Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, 'This child is destined to be a sign which men reject;
35(καὶ σοῦ [δὲ] αὐτῆς τὴν ψυχὴν διελεύσεται ῥομφαία), ὁπως ἂν ἀποκαλυφθῶσιν ἐκ πολλῶν καρδιῶν διαλογισμοί. and you too shall be pierced to the heart. Many in Israel will stand or fall because of him, and thus the secret thoughts of many will be laid bare.'

36Καὶ ἦν Ἅννα προφῆτις, θυγάτηρ φανουήλ, ἐκ φυλῆς Ἀσήρ· αὑτη προβεβηκυῖα ἐν ἡμέραις πολλαῖς, ζήσασα μετὰ ἀνδρὸς ἐτη ἑπτὰ ἀπὸ τῆς παρθενίας αὐτῆς, There was also a prophetess, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was a very old woman, who had lived seven years with her husband after she was first married,
37καὶ αὐτὴ χήρα ἑως ἐτῶν ὀγδοήκοντα τεσσάρων, ἣ οὐκ ἀφίστατο τοῦ ἱεροῦ νηστείαις καὶ δεήσεσιν λατρεύουσα νύκτα καὶ ἡμέραν. and then alone as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple, but worshipped day and night, fasting and praying.
Coming up at that very moment, she returned thanks to God; and she talked about the child to all who were looking for the liberation of Jerusalem.

When they had done everything prescribed in the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee to their own town of Nazareth.The Return to Nazareth Lk.2.39-40
The child grew big and strong and full of wisdom; and God's favour was upon him.
Now it was the practice of his parents to go to Jerusalem every year for the Passover festival;The Boy Jesus in the Temple Lk.2.41-52
42καὶ ὅτε ἐγένετο ἐτῶν δώδεκα, ἀναβαινόντων αὐτῶν κατὰ τὸ ἐθος τῆς ἑορτῆς and when he was twelve, they made the pilgrimage as usual.
When the festive season was over and they started for home, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem.
44νομίσαντες δὲ αὐτὸν εἶναι ἐν τῇ συνοδίᾳ ἦλθον ἡμέρας ὁδὸν καὶ ἀνεζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τοῖς συγγενεῦσιν καὶ τοῖς γνωστοῖς, His parents did not know of this; but thinking that he was with the party they journeyed on for a whole day, and only then did they begin looking for him among their friends and relations.
45καὶ μὴ εὑρόντες ὑπέστρεψαν εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἀναζητοῦντες αὐτόν. As they could not find him they returned to Jerusalem to look for him;
46καὶ ἐγένετο μετὰ ἡμέρας τρεῖς εὗρον αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ καθεζόμενον ἐν μέσῳ τῶν διδασκάλων καὶ ἀκούοντα αὐτῶν καὶ ἐπερωτῶντα αὐτούς· and after three days they found him sitting in the temple surrounded by the teachers, listening to them and putting questions;
47ἐξίσταντο δὲ πάντες οἱ ἀκούοντες αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τῇ συνέσει καὶ ταῖς ἀποκρίσεσιν αὐτοῦ. and all who heard him were amazed at his intelligence and the answers he gave.
His parents were astonished to see him there, and his mother said to him, 'My son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been searching for you in great anxiety.'
49καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτούς, Τί ὅτι ἐζητεῖτέ μὲ οὐκ ᾐδειτε ὅτι ἐν τοῖς τοῦ πατρός μου δεῖ εἶναί μὲ; 'What made you search?' he said. 'Did you not know that I was bound to be in my Father's house?'
But they did not understand what he meant.
Then he went back with them to Nazareth, and continued to be under their authority; his mother treasured up all these things in her heart.
As Jesus grew up he advanced in wisdom and in favour with God and men.
- And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature Lk.2.52 | 1Sm.2.26 | Pr.3.4
