when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judaea,
when Herod was prince of Galilee,
his brother Philip prince of Ituraea and Trachonitis,
and Lysanias prince of Abilene,
The Preaching of John the Baptist Lk.3.1-9 | Mt.3.1-12 | Mk.1.1-8 | Jn.1.19-28
2ἐπὶ ἀρχιερέως Ἅννα καὶ Καϊάφα, ἐγένετο ῥῆμα θεοῦ ἐπὶ Ἰωάννην τὸν Ζαχαρίου υἱὸν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ. during the high-priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas,
the word of God came to John son of Zechariah in the wilderness.

3καὶ ἦλθεν εἰς πᾶσαν [τὴν] περίχωρον τοῦ Ἰορδάνου κηρύσσων βάπτισμα μετανοίας εἰς ἀφεσιν ἀμαρτιῶν, And he went all over the Jordan valley proclaiming a baptism in token of repentance for the forgiveness of sins,

as it is written in the book of the prophecies of Isaiah:

'A voice crying aloud in the wilderness,
"Prepare a way for the Lord;
Clear a straight path for him.

- The voice of one crying in the wilderness Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. Lk.3.4-6 | Is.40.3-5

Every ravine shall be filled in,
And every mountain and hill levelled;
The corners shall be straightened,
And the rough ways made smooth;

And all mankind shall see God's deliverance." '
7Ἔλεγεν οὖν τοῖς ἐκπορευομένοις ὀχλοις βαπτισθῆναι ὑπ' αὐτοῦ, Γεννήματα ἐχιδνῶν, τίς ὑπέδειξεν ὑμῖν φυγεῖν ἀπὸ τῆς μελλούσης ὀργῆς; Crowds of people came out to be baptized by him, and he said to them: 'You vipers' brood! Who warned you to escape from the coming retribution?
Then prove your repentance by the fruit it bears; and do not begin saying to yourselves, "We have Abraham for our father." I tell you that God can make children for Abraham out of these stones here.
Already the axe is laid to the roots of the trees; and every tree that fails to produce good fruit is cut down and thrown on the fire.'

10Καὶ ἐπηρώτων αὐτὸν οἱ ὀχλοι λέγοντες, Τί οὖν ποιήσωμεν; The people asked him, 'Then what are we to do?'
He replied, 'The man with two shirts must share with him who has none, and anyone who has food must do the same.'
12ἦλθον δὲ καὶ τελῶναι βαπτισθῆναι καὶ εἶπαν πρὸς αὐτόν, Διδάσκαλε, τί ποιήσωμεν; Among those who came to be baptized were tax-gatherers, and they said to him, 'Master, what are we to do?'
He told them, 'Exact no more than the assessment.'
Soldiers on service also asked him, 'And what of us?' To them he said, 'No bullying; no blackmail; make do with your pay!'

15Προσδοκῶντος δὲ τοῦ λαοῦ καὶ διαλογιζομένων πάντων ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν περὶ τοῦ Ἰωάννου, μήποτε αὐτὸς εἰη ὁ Χριστός, The people were on the tiptoe of expectation, all wondering about John, whether perhaps he was the Messiah,
16ἀπεκρίνατο λέγων πᾶσιν ὁ Ἰωάννης, Ἐγὼ μὲν ὑδατι βαπτίζω ὑμᾶς· ἐρχεται δὲ ὁ ἰσχυρότερός μου, οὗ οὐκ εἰμὶ ἱκανὸς λῦσαι τὸν ἱμάντα τῶν ὑποδημάτων αὐτοῦ· αὐτὸς ὑμᾶς βαπτίσει ἐν πνεύματι ἀγίῳ καὶ πυρί· but he spoke out and said to them all, 'I baptize you with water; but there is one to come who is mightier than I. I am not fit to unfasten his shoes. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
His shovel is ready in his hand, to winnow his threshing-floor and gather the wheat into his granary; but he will bum the chaff on a fire that can never go out.'
18Πολλὰ μὲν οὖν καὶ ἑτερα παρακαλῶν εὐηγγελίζετο τὸν λαόν· In this and many other ways he made his appeal to the people and announced the good news.
19ὁ δὲ Ἡρῴδης ὁ τετραάρχης, ἐλεγχόμενος ὑπ' αὐτοῦ περὶ Ἡρῳδιάδος τῆς γυναικὸς τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ πάντων ὧν ἐποίησεν πονηρῶν ὁ Ἡρῴδης, But Prince Herod, when he was rebuked by him over the affair of his brother's wife Herodias and for his other misdeeds,
20προσέθηκεν καὶ τοῦτο ἐπὶ πᾶσιν [καὶ] κατέκλεισεν τὸν Ἰωάννην ἐν φυλακῇ. crowned them all by shutting John up in prison.

21Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ βαπτισθῆναι ἀπαντα τὸν λαὸν καὶ Ἰησοῦ βαπτισθέντος καὶ προσευχομένου ἀνεῳχθῆναι τὸν οὐρανὸν DURING A GENERAL BAPTISM of the people, when Jesus too had been baptized and was praying, heaven openedThe Baptism of Jesus Lk.3.21-22 | Mt.3.13-17 | Mk.1.9-11

and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove;
and there came a voice from heaven,

'Thou art my Son, my Beloved;
on thee my favour rests.'

23Καὶ αὐτὸς ἦν Ἰησοῦς ἀρχόμενος ὡσεὶ ἐτῶν τριάκοντα, ὢν υἱός, ὡς ἐνομίζετο, Ἰωσὴφ τοῦ Ἠλὶ When Jesus began his work he was about thirty years old,
