Whereas many great teachings have been given to us through the law and the prophets | ECCLESIASTICUS. THE WISDOM OF JOSHUA, SON OF SIRACH. Forward.
		| 2 |
and the others that followed them, |   | καὶ τῶν ἄλλων τῶν κατ' αὐτοὺς ἠκολουθηκότων δεδο μένων, |
		| 3 |
on account of which we should praise Israel for instruction and wisdom; |   | ὑπὲρ ὧν δέον ἐστὶν ἐπαινεῖν τὸν Ισραηλ παιδείας καὶ σοφίας, |
		| 4 |
and since it is necessary not only that the readers themselves should acquire understanding |   | καὶ ὡς οὐ μόνον αὐτοὺς τοὺς ἀναγινώσκοντας δέον ἐστὶν ἐπιστήμονας γίνεσθαι, |
		| 5 |
but also that those who love learning should be able to help the outsiders |   | ἀλλὰ καὶ τοῖς ἐκτὸς δύνασθαι τοὺς φιλομαθοῦντας χρη σίμους εἶναι |
		| 6 |
by both speaking and writing, |   | καὶ λέγοντας καὶ γράφοντας, |
		| 7 |
my grandfather Jesus, after devoting himself |   | ὁ πάππος μου Ἰησοῦς ἐπὶ πλεῖον ἑαυτὸν δοὺς |
		| 8 |
especially to the reading of the law |   | εἴς τε τὴν τοῦ νόμου |
		| 9 |
and the prophets |   | καὶ τῶν προφητῶν |
		| 10 |
and the other books of our fathers, |   | καὶ τῶν ἄλλων πατρίων βιβλίων ἀνάγνωσιν |
		| 11 |
and after acquiring considerable proficiency in them, |   | καὶ ἐν τούτοις ἱκανὴν ἕξιν περιποιησάμενος |
		| 12 |
was himself also led to write something pertaining to instruction and wisdom, |   | προήχθη καὶ αὐτὸς συγγράψαι τι τῶν εἰς παιδείαν καὶ σοφίαν ἀνηκόντων, |
		| 13 |
in order that, by becoming conversant with this also, |   | ὅπως οἱ φιλομαθεῖς καὶ τούτων ἔνοχοι γενόμενοι |
		| 14 |
those who love learning should make even greater progress in living according to the law. |
		| 15 |
You are urged therefore |   | Παρακέκλησθε οὖν |
		| 16 |
to read with good will and attention, |   | μετ' εὐνοίας καὶ προσοχῆς |
		| 17 |
and to be indulgent in cases where, |   | τὴν ἀνάγνωσιν ποιεῖσθαι |
		| 18 |
despite our diligent labour |   | καὶ συγγνώμην ἔχειν |
		| 19 |
in translating, |   | ἐφ' οἷς ἂν δοκῶμεν |
		| 20 |
we may seem to have rendered some phrases imperfectly.
		| 21 |
For what was originally |   | οὐ γὰρ ἰσοδυναμεῖ |
		| 22 |
expressed in Hebrew does not have exactly the same sense when translated into another language.
		| 23 |
Not only this work, |   | οὐ μόνον δὲ ταῦτα, |
		| 24 |
but even the law itself, the prophecies, |   | ἀλλὰ καὶ αὐτὸς ὁ νόμος καὶ αἱ προφητεῖαι |
		| 25 |
and the rest of the books |   | καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν βιβλίων |
		| 26 |
differ not a little as originally expressed. |
		| 27 |
When I came to Egypt in the thirty-eighth year of the reign of Euergetes |   | Ἑν γὰρ τῷ ὀγδόῳ καὶ τριακοστῷ ἔτει ἐπὶ τοῦ Εὐεργέτου βασιλέως |
		| 28 |
and stayed for some time, |   | παραγενηθεὶς εἰς Αἴγυπτον καὶ συγχρονίσας |
		| 29 |
I found opportunity for no little instruction.
		| 30 |
It seemed highly necessary that I should myself devote some pains and labour to the translation of the following book, |   | ἀναγκαιότατον ἐθέμην καὶ αὐτός τινα προσενέγκασθαι σπου δὴν καὶ φιλοπονίαν τοῦ μεθερμηνεῦσαι τήνδε τὴν βίβλον |
		| 31 |
using in that period of time |   | πολλὴν ἀγρυπνίαν καὶ ἐπιστήμην προσενεγκάμενος |
		| 32 |
great watchfulness and skill |   | ἐν τῷ διαστήματι τοῦ χρόνου |
		| 33 |
in order to complete and publish the book |   | πρὸς τὸ ἐπὶ πέρας ἀγαγόντα τὸ βιβλίον ἐκδόσθαι |
		| 34 |
for those living abroad who wished to gain learning, |   | καὶ τοῖς ἐν τῇ παροικίᾳ βουλομένοις φιλομαθεῖν |
		| 35 |
being prepared in character |   | προκατασκευαζομένους τὰ ἤθη |
		| 36 |
to live according to the law. |
