katapi NEW STUDY BIBLE | Romans:9 | Novum Testamentum Graece (UBS.Ed.26)
| I am speaking the truth in Christ, I am not lying; my conscience bears me witness in the Holy Spirit, | God's Election of Israel Ro.9.1-18 | Ἀλήθειαν λέγω ἐν Χριστῷ, οὐ ψεύδομαι, συμμαρτυρούσης μοι τῆς συνειδήσεώς μου ἐν πνεύματι ἀγίῳ,
| that I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart.
| For I could wish that I myself were accursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my brethren, my kinsmen by race.
| They are Israelites, and to them belong the sonship, the glory, the covenants, the giving of the law, the worship, and the promises; | οἱτινές εἰσιν Ἰσραηλῖται, ὧν ἡ υἱοθεσία καὶ ἡ δόξα καὶ αἱ διαθῆκαι καὶ ἡ νομοθεσία καὶ ἡ λατρεία καὶ αἱ ἐπαγγελίαι,
| to them belong the patriarchs, and of their race, according to the flesh, is the Christ. God who is over all be blessed for ever. Amen.
| But it is not as though the word of God had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel belong to Israel, | Οὐχ οἷον δὲ ὅτι ἐκπέπτωκεν ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ.
| and not all are children of Abraham because they are his descendants; but "Through Isaac shall your descendants be named." | - Through Isaac shall your descendants be named Ro.9.7 | Gn.21.12 | οὐδ' ὅτι εἰσὶν σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ, πάντες τέκνα, ἀλλ', Ἐν Ἰσαὰκ κληθήσεταί σοι σπέρμα.
| This means that it is not the children of the flesh who are the children of God, but the children of the promise are reckoned as descendants.
| For this is what the promise said, "About this time I will return and Sarah shall have a son." | - About this time I will return and Sarah shall have a son Ro.9.9 | Gn.18.10-14 | ἐπαγγελίας γὰρ ὁ λόγος οὗτος, Kατὰ τὸν καιρὸν τοῦτον ἐλεύσομαι καὶ ἔσται τῇ Σάρρᾳ υἱός.
| And not only so, but also when Rebecca had conceived children by one man, our forefather Isaac, | οὐ μόνον δέ, ἀλλὰ καὶ Ῥεβέκκα ἐξ ἑνὸς κοίτην ἐχουσα, Ἰσαὰκ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν·
| though they were not yet born and had done nothing either good or bad, in order that God's purpose of election might continue, not because of works but because of his call, | μήπω γὰρ γεννηθέντων μηδὲ πραξάντων τι ἀγαθὸν ἢ φαῦλον, ἵνα ἡ κατ' ἐκλογὴν πρόθεσις τοῦ θεοῦ μένῃ,
| she was told, "The elder will serve the younger." | - The elder will serve the younger Ro.9.12 | Gn.25.23 | οὐκ ἐξ ἐργων ἀλλ' ἐκ τοῦ καλοῦντος, ἐρρέθη αὐτῇ ὅτι Ὁ μείζων δουλεύσει τῷ ἐλάσσον·
| As it is written, "Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated." | - Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated Ro.9.13 | Mal.1.2-3 | καθὼς γέγραπται, Tὸν Ἰακὼβ ἠγάπησα,
| What shall we say then? Is there injustice on God's part? By no means!
| For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." | - I will have mercy on whom I have mercy Ro.9.15 | Ex.33.19 | τῷ Μωϋσεῖ γὰρ λέγει, Ἐλεήσω ὃν ἂν ἐλεῶ,
| So it depends not upon man's will or exertion, but upon God's mercy.
| For the scripture says to Pharaoh, "I have raised you up for the very purpose of showing my power in you, so that my name may be proclaimed in all the earth." | - I have raised you up for the very purpose Ro.9.17 | Ex.9.16 | λέγει γὰρ ἡ γραφὴ τῷ Φαραὼ ὅτι Εἰς αὐτὸ τοῦτο ἐξήγειρά σε ὅπως ἐνδείξωμαι ἐν σοὶ τὴν δύναμίν μου, καὶ ὅπως διαγγελῇ τὸ ὄνομά μου ἐν πάσῃ τῇ γῇ.
| So then he has mercy upon whomever he wills, and he hardens the heart of whomever he wills.
| You will say to me then, "Why does he still find fault? For who can resist his will?" | God's Wrath and Mercy Ro.9.19-29 | Ἐρεῖς μοι οὖν, Τί | ἐτι μέμφεταὶ τῷ γὰρ βουλήματι αὐτοῦ τίς ἀνθέστηκεν;|
| But who are you, a man, to answer back to God? Will what is molded say to its molder, "Why have you made me thus?" | - Will what is molded say to its molder Ro.9.20 | Is.29.16 | Is.45.9 | ὦ ἄνθρωπε, μενοῦνγε σὺ τίς εἶ ὁ ἀνταποκρινόμενος τῷ θεῷ; μὴ ἐρεῖ τὸ πλάσμα τῷ πλάσαντι, Τί με ἐποίησας οὑτως;
| Has the potter no right over the clay, to make out of the same lump one vessel for beauty and another for menial use? | - Has the potter no right over the clay Ro.9.21 | Jr.18.6 | ἢ οὐκ ἐχει ἐξουσίαν ὁ κεραμεὺς τοῦ πηλοῦ ἐκ τοῦ αὐτοῦ φυράματος ποιῆσαι ὃ μὲν εἰς τιμὴν σκεῦος, ὃ δὲ εἰς ἀτιμίαν;
| What if God, desiring to show his wrath and to make known his power, has endured with much patience the vessels of wrath made for destruction, | εἰ δὲ θέλων ὁ θεὸς ἐνδείξασθαι τὴν ὀργὴν καὶ γνωρίσαι τὸ δυνατὸν αὐτοῦ ἠνεγκεν ἐν πολλῇ μακροθυμίᾳ σκεύη ὀργῆς κατηρτισμένα εἰς ἀπώλειαν,
| in order to make known the riches of his glory for the vessels of mercy, which he has prepared beforehand for glory, | καὶ ἵνα γνωρίσῃ τὸν πλοῦτον τῆς δόξης αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ σκεύη ἐλέους, ἂ προητοίμασεν εἰς δόξαν,
| even us whom he has called, not from the Jews only but also from the Gentiles? | οὓς καὶ ἐκάλεσεν ἡμᾶς οὐ μόνον ἐξ Ἰουδαίων ἀλλὰ καὶ ἐξ ἐθνῶν;
| As indeed he says in Hosea, "Those who were not my people | - Those who were not my people Ro.9.25 | Hs.2.23 | ὡς καὶ ἐν τῷ Ὡσηὲ λέγει, Kαλέσω τὸν οὐ λαόν μου
| "And in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.' " | - You are not my people Ro.9.26 | Hs.1.10 | καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῷ τόπῳ οὗ ἐρρέθη αὐτοῖς, Οὐ λαός μου ὑμεῖς, ἐκεῖ κληθήσονται υἱοὶ θεοῦ ζῶντος.
| And Isaiah cries out concerning Israel: "Though the number of the sons of Israel be as the sand of the sea, | - only a remnant of them will be saved Ro.9.27-28 | Is.10.22-23 | Ἠσαΐας δὲ κράζει ὑπὲρ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ, Ἐὰν ᾖ ὁ ἀριθμὸς τῶν υἱῶν Ἰσραὴλ ὡς ἡ ἄμμος τῆς θαλάσσης, τὸ ὑπόλειμμα σωθήσεται·
| for the Lord will execute his sentence upon the earth with rigor and dispatch." | λόγον γὰρ συντελῶν καὶ συντέμνων ποιήσει κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς.
| And as Isaiah predicted, | - If the Lord of hosts had not left us children Ro.9.29 | Is.1.9 | καὶ καθὼς προείρηκεν Ἠσαΐας,
| |
| What shall we say, then? That Gentiles who did not pursue righteousness have attained it, that is, righteousness through faith; | Israel and the Gospel Ro.9.30-10.4 | Τί οὖν ἐροῦμεν; ὅτι ἐθνη τὰ μὴ διώκοντα δικαιοσύνην κατέλαβεν δικαιοσύνην, δικαιοσύνην δὲ τὴν ἐκ πίστεως·
| but that Israel who pursued the righteousness which is based on law did not succeed in fulfilling that law.
| Why? Because they did not pursue it through faith, but as if it were based on works. They have stumbled over the stumbling stone, | διὰ τί; ὅτι οὐκ ἐκ πίστεως ἀλλ' ὡς ἐξ ἐργων· προσέκοψαν τῷ λίθῳ τοῦ προσκόμματος,
| as it is written, "Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone that will make men stumble, | - Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone Ro.9.33 | Is.28.16 | καθὼς γέγραπται, Ἰδοὺ τίθημι ἐν Σιὼν λίθον προσκόμματος καὶ πέτραν σκανδάλου,
