| 1 | Σαρα δὲ ἡ γυνὴ Αβραμ οὐκ ἔτικτεν αὐτῷ. ἦν δὲ αὐτῇ παιδίσκη Αἰγυπτία, ᾗ ὄνομα Αγαρ. | And Sara the wife of Abram bore him no children; and she had an Egyptian maid, whose name was Agar. | Hagar and Ishmael. Gn.16.1-16 | Now Sar'ai, Abram's wife, bore him no children. She had an Egyptian maid whose name was Hagar; | וְשָׂרַי אֵשֶׁת אַבְרָם לֹא יָלְדָה לֹו וְלָהּ שִׁפְחָה מִצְרִית וּשְׁמָהּ הָגָר׃ | 1 |
| 2 | εἶπεν δὲ Σαρα πρὸς Αβραμ Ἰδοὺ συνέκλεισέν με κύριος τοῦ μὴ τίκτειν· εἴσελθε οὖν πρὸς τὴν παιδίσκην μου, ἵνα τεκνοποιήσῃς ἐξ αὐτῆς. ὑπήκουσεν δὲ Αβραμ τῆς φωνῆς Σαρας. | And Sara said to Abram, Behold, the Lord has restrained me from bearing, go therefore in to my maid, that I may get children for myself through her. And Abram listened to the voice of Sara. | and Sar'ai said to Abram, "Behold now, the LORD has prevented me from bearing children; go in to my maid; it may be that I shall obtain children by her." And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sar'ai. | וַתֹּאמֶר שָׂרַי אֶל־אַבְרָם הִנֵּה־נָא עֲצָרַנִי יְהוָה מִלֶּדֶת בֹּא־נָא אֶל־שִׁפְחָתִי אוּלַי אִבָּנֶה מִמֵּנָּה וַיִּשְׁמַע אַבְרָם לְקֹול שָׂרָי׃ | 2 | |
| 3 | καὶ λαβοῦσα Σαρα ἡ γυνὴ Αβραμ Αγαρ τὴν Αἰγυπτίαν τὴν ἑαυτῆς παιδίσκην - μετὰ δέκα ἔτη τοῦ οἰκῆσαι Αβραμ ἐν γῇ Χανααν - καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν Αβραμ τῷ ἀνδρὶ αὐτῆς αὐτῷ γυναῖκα. | So Sara the wife of Abram having taken Agar the Egyptian her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Chanaan, gave her to Abram her husband as a wife to him. | So, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, Sar'ai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her maid, and gave her to Abram her husband as a wife. | וַתִּקַּח שָׂרַי אֵשֶׁת־אַבְרָם אֶת־הָגָר הַמִּצְרִית שִׁפְחָתָהּ מִקֵּץ עֶשֶׂר שָׁנִים לְשֶׁבֶת אַבְרָם בְּאֶרֶץ כְּנָעַן וַתִּתֵּן אֹתָהּ לְאַבְרָם אִישָׁהּ לֹו לְאִשָּׁה׃ | 3 | |
| 4 | καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς Αγαρ, καὶ συνέλαβεν καὶ εἶδεν ὅτι ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχει, καὶ ἠτιμάσθη ἡ κυρία ἐναντίον αὐτῆς. | And he went in to Agar, and she conceived, and saw that she was with child, and her mistress was dishonoured before her. | And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked with contempt on her mistress. | וַיָּבֹא אֶל־הָגָר וַתַּהַר וַתֵּרֶא כִּי הָרָתָה וַתֵּקַל גְּבִרְתָּהּ בְּעֵינֶיהָ׃ | 4 | |
| 5 | εἶπεν δὲ Σαρα πρὸς Αβραμ Ἀδικοῦμαι ἐκ σοῦ· ἐγὼ δέδωκα τὴν παιδίσκην μου εἰς τὸν κόλπον σου, ἰδοῦσα δὲ ὅτι ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχει, ἠτιμάσθην ἐναντίον αὐτῆς· κρίναι ὁ θεὸς ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ σοῦ. | And Sara said to Abram, I am injured by you; I gave my handmaid into your bosom, and when I saw that she was with child, I was dishonoured before her. The Lord judge between me and you. | And Sar'ai said to Abram, "May the wrong done to me be on you! I gave my maid to your embrace, and when she saw that she had conceived, she looked on me with contempt. May the LORD judge between you and me!" | וַתֹּאמֶר שָׂרַי אֶל־אַבְרָם חֲמָסִי עָלֶיךָ אָנֹכִי נָתַתִּי שִׁפְחָתִי בְּחֵיקֶךָ וַתֵּרֶא כִּי הָרָתָה וָאֵקַל בְּעֵינֶיהָ יִשְׁפֹּט יְהוָה בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶיךָ׃ | 5 | |
| 6 | εἶπεν δὲ Αβραμ πρὸς Σαραν Ἰδοὺ ἡ παιδίσκη σου ἐν ταῖς χερσίν σου· χρῶ αὐτῇ, ὡς ἄν σοι ἀρεστὸν ᾖ. καὶ ἐκάκωσεν αὐτὴν Σαρα, καὶ ἀπέδρα ἀπὸ προσώπου αὐτῆς. | And Abram said to Sara, Behold your handmaid is in your hands, use her as it may seem good to you. And Sara afflicted her, and she fled from her face. | But Abram said to Sar'ai, "Behold, your maid is in your power; do to her as you please." Then Sar'ai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her. | וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָם אֶל־שָׂרַי הִנֵּה שִׁפְחָתֵךְ בְּיָדֵךְ עֲשִׂי־לָהּ הַטֹּוב בְּעֵינָיִךְ וַתְּעַנֶּהָ שָׂרַי וַתִּבְרַח מִפָּנֶיהָ׃ | 6 | |
| 7 | Εὗρεν δὲ αὐτὴν ἄγγελος κυρίου ἐπὶ τῆς πηγῆς τοῦ ὕδατος ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, ἐπὶ τῆς πηγῆς ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ Σουρ. | And an angel of the Lord found her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Sur. | The angel of the LORD found her by a spring of water in the wilderness, the spring on the way to Shur. | וַיִּמְצָאָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה עַל־עֵין הַמַּיִם בַּמִּדְבָּר עַל־הָעַיִן בְּדֶרֶךְ שׁוּר׃ | 7 | |
| 8 | καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου Αγαρ παιδίσκη Σαρας, πόθεν ἔρχῃ καὶ ποῦ πορεύῃ; καὶ εἶπεν Ἀπὸ προσώπου Σαρας τῆς κυρίας μου ἐγὼ ἀποδιδράσκω. | And the angel of the Lord said to her, Agar, Sara's maid, where have you come from, and where are you going? and she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sara. | And he said, "Hagar, maid of Sar'ai, where have you come from and where are you going?" She said, "I am fleeing from my mistress Sar'ai." | וַיֹּאמַר הָגָר שִׁפְחַת שָׂרַי אֵי־מִזֶּה בָאת וְאָנָה תֵלֵכִי וַתֹּאמֶר מִפְּנֵי שָׂרַי גְּבִרְתִּי אָנֹכִי בֹּרַחַת׃ | 8 | |
| 9 | εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῇ ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου Ἀποστράφητι πρὸς τὴν κυρίαν σου καὶ ταπεινώθητι ὑπὸ τὰς χεῖρας αὐτῆς. | And the angel of the Lord said to her, Return to your mistress, and submit yourself under her hands. | The angel of the LORD said to her, "Return to your mistress, and submit to her." | וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה שׁוּבִי אֶל־גְּבִרְתֵּךְ וְהִתְעַנִּי תַּחַת יָדֶיהָ׃ | 9 | |
| 10 | καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου Πληθύνων πληθυνῶ τὸ σπέρμα σου, καὶ οὐκ ἀριθμηθήσεται ἀπὸ τοῦ πλήθους. | And the angel of the Lord said to her, I will surely multiply your seed, and it shall not be numbered for multitude. | The angel of the LORD also said to her, "I will so greatly multiply your descendants that they cannot be numbered for multitude." | וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה הַרְבָּה אַרְבֶּה אֶת־זַרְעֵךְ וְלֹא יִסָּפֵר מֵרֹב׃ | 10 | |
| 11 | καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ ὁ ἄγγελος κυρίου Ἰδοὺ σὺ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχεις καὶ τέξῃ υἱὸν καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ισμαηλ, ὅτι ἐπήκουσεν κύριος τῇ ταπεινώσει σου. | And the angel of the Lord said to her, Behold you are with child, and shall bear a son, and shall call his name Ismael, for the Lord hath listened to your humiliation. | And the angel of the LORD said to her, "Behold, you are with child, and shall bear a son; you shall call his name Ish'mael; because the LORD has given heed to your affliction. | וַיֹּאמֶר לָהּ מַלְאַךְ יְהוָה
כִּי־שָׁמַע יְהוָה אֶל־עָנְיֵךְ׃ |

| 12 | οὗτος ἔσται ἄγροικος ἄνθρωπος· αἱ χεῖρες αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ πάντας, καὶ αἱ χεῖρες πάντων ἐπ' αὐτόν, καὶ κατὰ πρόσωπον πάντων τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ κατοικήσει. | He shall be a wild man, his hands against all, and the hands of all against him, and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. | He shall be a wild ass of a man, his hand against every man and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell over against all his kinsmen." | וְהוּא יִהְיֶה פֶּרֶא אָדָם יָדֹו בַכֹּל וְיַד כֹּל בֹּו וְעַל־פְּנֵי כָל־אֶחָיו יִשְׁכֹּן׃ |

| 13 | καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Αγαρ τὸ ὄνομα κυρίου τοῦ λαλοῦντος πρὸς αὐτήν Σὺ ὁ θεὸς ὁ ἐπιδών με· ὅτι εἶπεν Καὶ γὰρ ἐνώπιον εἶδον ὀφθέντα μοι. | And she called the name of the Lord God who spoke to her, You are God who sees me; for she said, For I have openly seen him that appeared to me. | So she called the name of the LORD who spoke to her, "Thou art a God of seeing"; for she said, "Have I really seen God and remained alive after seeing him?" | וַתִּקְרָא שֵׁם־יְהוָה הַדֹּבֵר אֵלֶיהָ אַתָּה אֵל רֳאִי כִּי אָמְרָה הֲגַם הֲלֹם רָאִיתִי אַחֲרֵי רֹאִי׃ | 13 | |
| 14 | ἕνεκεν τούτου ἐκάλεσεν τὸ φρέαρ Φρέαρ οὗ ἐνώπιον εἶδον· ἰδοὺ ἀνὰ μέσον Καδης καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον Βαραδ. | Therefore she called the well, The well of him whom I have openly seen; behold it is between Cades and Barad. | Therefore the well was called Beer-la'hai-roi; it lies between Kadesh and Bered. | עַל־כֵּן קָרָא לַבְּאֵר בְּאֵר לַחַי רֹאִי הִנֵּה בֵין־קָדֵשׁ וּבֵין בָּרֶד׃ | 14 | |
| 15 | Καὶ ἔτεκεν Αγαρ τῷ Αβραμ υἱόν, καὶ ἐκάλεσεν Αβραμ τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ υἱοῦ αὐτοῦ, ὃν ἔτεκεν αὐτῷ Αγαρ, Ισμαηλ. | And Agar bore a son to Abram; and Abram called the name of his son which Agar bore to him, Ismael.16:16 And Abram was eighty-six years old, when Agar bore Ismael to Abram. | And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ish'mael. | וַתֵּלֶד הָגָר לְאַבְרָם בֵּן וַיִּקְרָא אַבְרָם שֶׁם־בְּנֹו אֲשֶׁר־יָלְדָה הָגָר יִשְׁמָעֵאל׃ | 15 | |
| 16 | Αβραμ δὲ ἦν ὀγδοήκοντα ἓξ ἐτῶν, ἡνίκα ἔτεκεν Αγαρ τὸν Ισμαηλ τῷ Αβραμ. | And Abram was eighty-six years old when Agar bore Ismael to Abram. | Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar bore Ish'mael to Abram. | וְאַבְרָם בֶּן־שְׁמֹנִים שָׁנָה וְשֵׁשׁ שָׁנִים בְּלֶדֶת־הָגָר אֶת־יִשְׁמָעֵאל לְאַבְרָם׃ ס | 16 | |
