| 1 | Ἑγένετο δὲ Αβραμ ἐτῶν ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα, καὶ ὤφθη κύριος τῷ Αβραμ καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Ἑγώ εἰμι ὁ θεός σου· εὐαρέστει ἐναντίον ἐμοῦ καὶ γίνου ἄμεμπτος, |
And Abram was ninety-nine years old, and the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, I am your God, be well-pleasing before me, and be blameless. | The covenant - Abraham and his household are circumcised. Gn.17.1-27 | When Abram was ninety-nine years old the LORD appeared to Abram, and said to him, "I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless. | וַיְהִי אַבְרָם בֶּן־תִּשְׁעִים שָׁנָה וְתֵשַׁע שָׁנִים וַיֵּרָא יְהוָה אֶל־אַבְרָם וַיֹּאמֶר אֵלָיו אֲנִי־אֵל שַׁדַּי הִתְהַלֵּךְ לְפָנַי וֶהְיֵה תָמִים׃ |

| 2 | καὶ θήσομαι τὴν διαθήκην μου ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον σοῦ καὶ πληθυνῶ σε σφόδρα. |
And I will establish my covenant between me and you, and I will multiply you exceedingly. | | And I will make my covenant between me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly." | וְאֶתְּנָה בְרִיתִי בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶךָ וְאַרְבֶּה אֹותְךָ בִּמְאֹד מְאֹד׃ |

| 3 | καὶ ἔπεσεν Αβραμ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ ὁ θεὸς λέγων |
And Abram fell upon his face, and God spoke to him, saying, | | Then Abram fell on his face; and God said to him, | וַיִּפֹּל אַבְרָם עַל־פָּנָיו וַיְדַבֵּר אִתֹּו אֱלֹהִים לֵאמֹר׃ |

| 4 | Καὶ ἐγὼ ἰδοὺ ἡ διαθήκη μου μετὰ σοῦ, καὶ ἔσῃ πατὴρ πλήθους ἐθνῶν. |
And I, behold! my covenant [is] with you, and you shall be a father of a multitude of nations. | | "Behold, my covenant is with you, and you shall be the father of a multitude of nations. | אֲנִי הִנֵּה בְרִיתִי אִתָּךְ וְהָיִיתָ לְאַב הֲמֹון גֹּויִם׃ |

| 5 | καὶ οὐ κληθήσεται ἔτι τὸ ὄνομά σου Αβραμ, ἀλλ' ἔσται τὸ ὄνομά σου Αβρααμ, ὅτι πατέρα πολλῶν ἐθνῶν τέθεικά σε. |
And your name shall no more be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraam, for I have made you a father of many nations. | | No longer shall your name be Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations. | וְלֹא־יִקָּרֵא עֹוד אֶת־שִׁמְךָ אַבְרָם וְהָיָה שִׁמְךָ אַבְרָהָם כִּי אַב־הֲמֹון גֹּויִם נְתַתִּיךָ׃ |

| 6 | καὶ αὐξανῶ σε σφόδρα σφόδρα καὶ θήσω σε εἰς ἔθνη, καὶ βασιλεῖς ἐκ σοῦ ἐξελεύσονται. |
And I will increase you very exceedingly, and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come out of you. | | I will make you exceedingly fruitful; and I will make nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you. | וְהִפְרֵתִי אֹתְךָ בִּמְאֹד מְאֹד וּנְתַתִּיךָ לְגֹויִם וּמְלָכִים מִמְּךָ יֵצֵאוּ׃ |

| 7 | καὶ στήσω τὴν διαθήκην μου ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον σοῦ καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σπέρματός σου μετὰ σὲ εἰς γενεὰς αὐτῶν εἰς διαθήκην αἰώνιον εἶναί σου θεὸς καὶ τοῦ σπέρματός σου μετὰ σέ. |
And I will establish my covenant between you and your seed after you, to their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be your God, and [the God] of your seed after you. | | And I will establish my covenant between me and you and your descendants after you throughout their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your descendants after you. | וַהֲקִמֹתִי אֶת־בְּרִיתִי בֵּינִי וּבֵינֶךָ וּבֵין זַרְעֲךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ לְדֹרֹתָם לִבְרִית עֹולָם לִהְיֹות לְךָ לֵאלֹהִים וּלְזַרְעֲךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ׃ |

| 8 | καὶ δώσω σοι καὶ τῷ σπέρματί σου μετὰ σὲ τὴν γῆν, ἣν παροικεῖς, πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν Χανααν, εἰς κατάσχεσιν αἰώνιον καὶ ἔσομαι αὐτοῖς θεός. - |
And I will give to you and to your seed after you the land wherein you sojourn, even all the land of Chanaan for an everlasting possession, and I will be to them a God. | | And I will give to you, and to your descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God." | וְנָתַתִּי לְךָ וּלְזַרְעֲכָ אַחֲרֶיךָ אֵת אֶרֶץ מְגֻרֶיךָ אֵת כָּל־אֶרֶץ כְּנַעַן לַאֲחֻזַּת עֹולָם וְהָיִיתִי לָהֶם לֵאלֹהִים׃ |

| 9 | καὶ εἶπεν ὁ θεὸς πρὸς Αβρααμ Σὺ δὲ τὴν διαθήκην μου διατηρήσεις, σὺ καὶ τὸ σπέρμα σου μετὰ σὲ εἰς τὰς γενεὰς αὐτῶν. |
And God said to Abraam, You shall also fully keep my covenant, you and your seed after you for their generations. | | And God said to Abraham, "As for you, you shall keep my covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout their generations. | וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל־אַבְרָהָם וְאַתָּה אֶת־בְּרִיתִי תִשְׁמֹר אַתָּה וְזַרְעֲךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ לְדֹרֹתָם׃ |

| 10 | καὶ αὕτη ἡ διαθήκη, ἣν διατηρήσεις, ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ὑμῶν καὶ ἀνὰ μέσον τοῦ σπέρματός σου μετὰ σὲ εἰς τὰς γενεὰς αὐτῶν· περιτμηθήσεται ὑμῶν πᾶν ἀρσενικόν, |
And this [is] the covenant which you shall fully keep between me and you, and between your seed after you for their generations; every male of you shall be circumcised. | | This is my covenant, which you shall keep, between me and you and your descendants after you: Every male among you shall be circumcised. | זֹאת בְּרִיתִי אֲשֶׁר תִּשְׁמְרוּ בֵּינִי וּבֵינֵיכֶם וּבֵין זַרְעֲךָ אַחֲרֶיךָ הִמֹּול לָכֶם כָּל־זָכָר׃ |

| 11 | καὶ περιτμηθήσεσθε τὴν σάρκα τῆς ἀκροβυστίας ὑμῶν, καὶ ἔσται ἐν σημείῳ διαθήκης ἀνὰ μέσον ἐμοῦ καὶ ὑμῶν. |
And you shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between me and you. | | You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you. | וּנְמַלְתֶּם אֵת בְּשַׂר עָרְלַתְכֶם וְהָיָה לְאֹות בְּרִית בֵּינִי וּבֵינֵיכֶם׃ |

| 12 | καὶ παιδίον ὀκτὼ ἡμερῶν περιτμηθήσεται ὑμῖν πᾶν ἀρσενικὸν εἰς τὰς γενεὰς ὑμῶν, ὁ οἰκογενὴς τῆς οἰκίας σου καὶ ὁ ἀργυρώνητος ἀπὸ παντὸς υἱοῦ ἀλλοτρίου, ὃς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματός σου. |
And the child of eight days [old] shall be circumcised by you, every male throughout your generations, and [the servant] born in the house and he that is bought with money, of every son of a stranger, who is not of your seed. | | He that is eight days old among you shall be circumcised; every male throughout your generations, whether born in your house, or bought with your money from any foreigner who is not of your offspring, | וּבֶן־שְׁמֹנַת יָמִים יִמֹּול לָכֶם כָּל־זָכָר לְדֹרֹתֵיכֶם יְלִיד בָּיִת וּמִקְנַת־כֶּסֶף מִכֹּל בֶּן־נֵכָר אֲשֶׁר לֹא מִזַּרְעֲךָ הוּא׃ |

| 13 | περιτομῇ περιτμηθήσεται ὁ οἰκογενὴς τῆς οἰκίας σου καὶ ὁ ἀργυρώνητος, καὶ ἔσται ἡ διαθήκη μου ἐπὶ τῆς σαρκὸς ὑμῶν εἰς διαθήκην αἰώνιον. |
He that is born in your house, and he that is bought with money shall be surely circumcised, and my covenant shall be on your flesh for an everlasting covenant. | | both he that is born in your house and he that is bought with your money, shall be circumcised. So shall my covenant be in your flesh an everlasting covenant. | הִמֹּול יִמֹּול יְלִיד בֵּיתְךָ וּמִקְנַת כַּסְפֶּךָ וְהָיְתָה בְרִיתִי בִּבְשַׂרְכֶם לִבְרִית עֹולָם׃ |

| 14 | καὶ ἀπερίτμητος ἄρσην, ὃς οὐ περιτμηθήσεται τὴν σάρκα τῆς ἀκροβυστίας αὐτοῦ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ὀγδόῃ, ἐξολεθρευθήσεται ἡ ψυχὴ ἐκείνη ἐκ τοῦ γένους αὐτῆς, ὅτι τὴν διαθήκην μου διεσκέδασεν. |
And the uncircumcised male, who shall not be circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin on the eighth day, that soul shall be utterly destroyed from its family, for he has broken my covenant. | | Any uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin shall be cut off from his people; he has broken my covenant." | וְעָרֵל זָכָר אֲשֶׁר לֹא־יִמֹּול אֶת־בְּשַׂר עָרְלָתֹו וְנִכְרְתָה הַנֶּפֶשׁ הַהִוא מֵעַמֶּיהָ אֶת־בְּרִיתִי הֵפַר׃ ס |

| 15 | Εἶπεν δὲ ὁ θεὸς τῷ Αβρααμ Σαρα ἡ γυνή σου, οὐ κληθήσεται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς Σαρα, ἀλλὰ Σαρρα ἔσται τὸ ὄνομα αὐτῆς. |
And God said to Abraam, Sara your wife-- her name shall not be called Sara, Sarrha shall be her name. | | And God said to Abraham, "As for Sar'ai your wife, you shall not call her name Sar'ai, but Sarah shall be her name. | וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֶל־אַבְרָהָם שָׂרַי אִשְׁתְּךָ לֹא־תִקְרָא אֶת־שְׁמָהּ שָׂרָי כִּי שָׂרָה שְׁמָהּ׃ |
15 |
| 16 | εὐλογήσω δὲ αὐτὴν καὶ δώσω σοι ἐξ αὐτῆς τέκνον· καὶ εὐλογήσω αὐτόν, καὶ ἔσται εἰς ἔθνη, καὶ βασιλεῖς ἐθνῶν ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔσονται. |
And I will bless her, and give you a son of her, and I will bless him, and he shall become nations, and kings of nations shall be of him. | | I will bless her, and moreover I will give you a son by her; I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of peoples shall come from her." | וּבֵרַכְתִּי אֹתָהּ וְגַם נָתַתִּי מִמֶּנָּה לְךָ בֵּן וּבֵרַכְתִּיהָ וְהָיְתָה לְגֹויִם מַלְכֵי עַמִּים מִמֶּנָּה יִהְיוּ׃ |

| 17 | καὶ ἔπεσεν Αβρααμ ἐπὶ πρόσωπον καὶ ἐγέλασεν καὶ εἶπεν ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ αὐτοῦ λέγων Εἰ τῷ ἑκατονταετεῖ γενήσεται, καὶ εἰ Σαρρα ἐνενήκοντα ἐτῶν οὖσα τέξεται; |
And Abraam fell upon his face, and laughed; and spoke in his heart, saying, Shall there be a child to one who is a hundred years old, and shall Sarrha who is ninety years old, bear? | | Then Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said to himself, "Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old? Shall Sarah, who is ninety years old, bear a child?" | וַיִּפֹּל אַבְרָהָם עַל־פָּנָיו וַיִּצְחָק וַיֹּאמֶר בְּלִבֹּו הַלְּבֶן מֵאָה־שָׁנָה יִוָּלֵד וְאִם־שָׂרָה הֲבַת־תִּשְׁעִים שָׁנָה תֵּלֵד׃ |

| 18 | εἶπεν δὲ Αβρααμ πρὸς τὸν θεόν Ισμαηλ οὗτος ζήτω ἐναντίον σου. |
And Abraam said to God, Let this Ismael live before you. | | And Abraham said to God, "O that Ish'mael might live in thy sight!" | וַיֹּאמֶר אַבְרָהָם אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִים לוּ יִשְׁמָעֵאל יִחְיֶה לְפָנֶיךָ׃ |

| 19 | εἶπεν δὲ ὁ θεὸς τῷ Αβρααμ Ναί· ἰδοὺ Σαρρα ἡ γυνή σου τέξεταί σοι υἱόν, καὶ καλέσεις τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ισαακ, καὶ στήσω τὴν διαθήκην μου πρὸς αὐτὸν εἰς διαθήκην αἰώνιον καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ μετ' αὐτόν. |
And God said to Abraam, Yes, behold, Sarrha your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish my covenant with him, for an everlasting covenant, to be a God to him and to his seed after him. | | God said, "No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. | וַיֹּאמֶר אֱלֹהִים אֲבָל שָׂרָה אִשְׁתְּךָ יֹלֶדֶת לְךָ בֵּן וְקָרָאתָ אֶת־שְׁמֹו יִצְחָק וַהֲקִמֹתִי אֶת־בְּרִיתִי אִתֹּו לִבְרִית עֹולָם לְזַרְעֹו אַחֲרָיו׃ |
19 |
| 20 | περὶ δὲ Ισμαηλ ἰδοὺ ἐπήκουσά σου· ἰδοὺ εὐλόγησα αὐτὸν καὶ αὐξανῶ αὐτὸν καὶ πληθυνῶ αὐτὸν σφόδρα· δώδεκα ἔθνη γεννήσει, καὶ δώσω αὐτὸν εἰς ἔθνος μέγα. |
And concerning Ismael, behold, I have heard you, and, behold, I have blessed him, and will increase him and multiply him exceedingly; twelve nations shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation. | | As for Ish'mael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless him and make him fruitful and multiply him exceedingly; he shall be the father of twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation. | וּלְיִשְׁמָעֵאל שְׁמַעְתִּיךָ הִנֵּה בֵּרַכְתִּי אֹתֹו וְהִפְרֵיתִי אֹתֹו וְהִרְבֵּיתִי אֹתֹו בִּמְאֹד מְאֹד שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂר נְשִׂיאִם יֹולִיד וּנְתַתִּיו לְגֹוי גָּדֹול׃ |

| 21 | τὴν δὲ διαθήκην μου στήσω πρὸς Ισαακ, ὃν τέξεταί σοι Σαρρα εἰς τὸν καιρὸν τοῦτον ἐν τῷ ἐνιαυτῷ τῷ ἑτέρῳ. |
But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarrha shall bear to you at this time, in the next year. | | But I will establish my covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this season next year." | וְאֶת־בְּרִיתִי אָקִים אֶת־יִצְחָק אֲשֶׁר תֵּלֵד לְךָ שָׂרָה לַמֹּועֵד הַזֶּה בַּשָּׁנָה הָאַחֶרֶת׃ |

| 22 | συνετέλεσεν δὲ λαλῶν πρὸς αὐτὸν καὶ ἀνέβη ὁ θεὸς ἀπὸ Αβρααμ. |
And he left off speaking with him, and God went up from Abraam. | | When he had finished talking with him, God went up from Abraham. | וַיְכַל לְדַבֵּר אִתֹּו וַיַּעַל אֱלֹהִים מֵעַל אַבְרָהָם׃ |

| 23 | Καὶ ἔλαβεν Αβρααμ Ισμαηλ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντας τοὺς οἰκογενεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἀργυρωνήτους καὶ πᾶν ἄρσεν τῶν ἀνδρῶν τῶν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ Αβρααμ καὶ περιέτεμεν τὰς ἀκροβυστίας αὐτῶν ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης, καθὰ ἐλάλησεν αὐτῷ ὁ θεός. |
And Abraam took Ismael his son, and all his home-born [servants], and all those bought with money, and every male of the men in the house of Abraam, and he circumcised their foreskins in the time of that day, according as God spoke to him. | | Then Abraham took Ish'mael his son and all the slaves born in his house or bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house, and he circumcised the flesh of their foreskins that very day, as God had said to him. | וַיִּקַּח אַבְרָהָם אֶת־יִשְׁמָעֵאל בְּנֹו וְאֵת כָּל־יְלִידֵי בֵיתֹו וְאֵת כָּל־מִקְנַת כַּסְפֹּו כָּל־זָכָר בְּאַנְשֵׁי בֵּית אַבְרָהָם וַיָּמָל אֶת־בְּשַׂר עָרְלָתָם בְּעֶצֶם הַיֹּום הַזֶּה כַּאֲשֶׁר דִּבֶּר אִתֹּו אֱלֹהִים׃ |

| 24 | Αβρααμ δὲ ἦν ἐνενήκοντα ἐννέα ἐτῶν, ἡνίκα περιέτεμεν τὴν σάρκα τῆς ἀκροβυστίας αὐτοῦ· |
And Abraam was ninety-nine years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. | | Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. | וְאַבְרָהָם בֶּן־תִּשְׁעִים וָתֵשַׁע שָׁנָה בְּהִמֹּלֹו בְּשַׂר עָרְלָתֹו׃ |

| 25 | Ισμαηλ δὲ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἐτῶν δέκα τριῶν ἦν, ἡνίκα περιετμήθη τὴν σάρκα τῆς ἀκροβυστίας αὐτοῦ. |
And Ismael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. | | And Ish'mael his son was thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. | וְיִשְׁמָעֵאל בְּנֹו בֶּן־שְׁלֹשׁ עֶשְׂרֵה שָׁנָה בְּהִמֹּלֹו אֵת בְּשַׂר עָרְלָתֹו׃ |

| 26 | ἐν τῷ καιρῷ τῆς ἡμέρας ἐκείνης περιετμήθη Αβρααμ καὶ Ισμαηλ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ· |
And at the period of that day, Abraam was circumcised, and Ismael his son, | | That very day Abraham and his son Ish'mael were circumcised; | בְּעֶצֶם הַיֹּום הַזֶּה נִמֹּול אַבְרָהָם וְיִשְׁמָעֵאל בְּנֹו׃ |

| 27 | καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες τοῦ οἴκου αὐτοῦ καὶ οἱ οἰκογενεῖς καὶ οἱ ἀργυρώνητοι ἐξ ἀλλογενῶν ἐθνῶν, περιέτεμεν αὐτούς. |
and all the men of his house, both those born in the house, and those bought with money of foreign nations. | | and all the men of his house, those born in the house and those bought with money from a foreigner, were circumcised with him. | וְכָל־אַנְשֵׁי בֵיתֹו יְלִיד בָּיִת וּמִקְנַת־כֶּסֶף מֵאֵת בֶּן־נֵכָר נִמֹּלוּ אִתֹּו׃ ף |
