| 1 | Ἑγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ καιρῷ ἐκείνῳ κατέβη Ιουδας ἀπὸ τῶν ἀδελφῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ ἀφίκετο ἕως πρὸς ἄνθρωπόν τινα Οδολλαμίτην, ᾧ ὄνομα Ιρας. |
And it came to pass at that time that Judas went down from his brethren, and came as far as to a certain man of Odollam, whose name was Iras. | Judah and Tamar. Gn.38.1-30 | It happened at that time that Judah went down from his brothers, and turned in to a certain Adullamite, whose name was Hirah. | וַיְהִי בָּעֵת הַהִוא וַיֵּרֶד יְהוּדָה מֵאֵת אֶחָיו וַיֵּט עַד־אִישׁ עֲדֻלָּמִי וּשְׁמֹו חִירָה׃ |

And Judas saw there the daughter of a Chananitish man, whose name was Sava; and he took her, and went in to her. | | There Judah saw the daughter of a certain Canaanite whose name was Shua; he married her and went in to her, | וַיַּרְא־שָׁם יְהוּדָה בַּת־אִישׁ כְּנַעֲנִי וּשְׁמֹו שׁוּעַ וַיִּקָּחֶהָ וַיָּבֹא אֵלֶיהָ׃ |

And she conceived and bore a son, and called his name, Er. | | and she conceived and bore a son, and he called his name Er. | וַתַּהַר וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן וַיִּקְרָא אֶת־שְׁמֹו עֵר׃ |

And she conceived and bore a son again; and called his name, Aunan. | | Again she conceived and bore a son, and she called his name Onan. | וַתַּהַר עֹוד וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן וַתִּקְרָא אֶת־שְׁמֹו אֹוןָן׃ |

| 5 | καὶ προσθεῖσα ἔτι ἔτεκεν υἱὸν καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Σηλωμ. αὐτὴ δὲ ἦν ἐν Χασβι, ἡνίκα ἔτεκεν αὐτούς. |
And she again bore a son; and called his name, Selom: and she was in Chasbi when she bore them. | | Yet again she bore a son, and she called his name Shelah. She was in Chezib when she bore him. | וַתֹּסֶף עֹוד וַתֵּלֶד בֵּן וַתִּקְרָא אֶת־שְׁמֹו שֵׁלָה וְהָיָה בִכְזִיב בְּלִדְתָּהּ אֹתֹו׃ |

| 6 | καὶ ἔλαβεν Ιουδας γυναῖκα Ηρ τῷ πρωτοτόκῳ αὐτοῦ, ᾗ ὄνομα Θαμαρ. |
And Judas took a wife for Er his first-born, whose name was Thamar. | | And Judah took a wife for Er his first-born, and her name was Tamar. | וַיִּקַּח יְהוּדָה אִשָּׁה לְעֵר בְּכֹורֹו וּשְׁמָהּ תָּמָר׃ |

| 7 | ἐγένετο δὲ Ηρ πρωτότοκος Ιουδα πονηρὸς ἐναντίον κυρίου, καὶ ἀπέκτεινεν αὐτὸν ὁ θεός. |
And Er, the first-born of Judas, was wicked before the Lord; and God killed him. | | But Er, Judah's first-born, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. | וַיְהִי עֵר בְּכֹור יְהוּדָה רַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה וַיְמִתֵהוּ יְהוָה׃ |

| 8 | εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας τῷ Αυναν Εἴσελθε πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ σου καὶ γάμβρευσαι αὐτὴν καὶ ἀνάστησον σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ σου. |
And Judas said to Aunan, Go in to your brother's wife, and marry her as her brother-in-law, and raise up seed to your brother. | | Then Judah said to Onan, "Go in to your brother's wife, and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise up offspring for your brother." | וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוּדָה לְאֹוןָן בֹּא אֶל־אֵשֶׁת אָחִיךָ וְיַבֵּם אֹתָהּ וְהָקֵם זֶרַע לְאָחִיךָ׃ |

| 9 | γνοὺς δὲ Αυναν ὅτι οὐκ αὐτῷ ἔσται τὸ σπέρμα, ἐγίνετο ὅταν εἰσήρχετο πρὸς τὴν γυναῖκα τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ, ἐξέχεεν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν τοῦ μὴ δοῦναι σπέρμα τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ. |
And Aunan, knowing that the seed should not be his-- it came to pass when he went in to his brother's wife, that he spilled [it] upon the ground, so that he should not give seed to his brother's wife. | | But Onan knew that the offspring would not be his; so when he went in to his brother's wife he spilled the semen on the ground, lest he should give offspring to his brother. | וַיֵּדַע אֹוןָן כִּי לֹּא לֹו יִהְיֶה הַזָּרַע וְהָיָה אִם־בָּא אֶל־אֵשֶׁת אָחִיו וְשִׁחֵת אַרְצָה לְבִלְתִּי נְתָן־זֶרַע לְאָחִיו׃ |

| 10 | πονηρὸν δὲ ἐφάνη ἐναντίον τοῦ θεοῦ ὅτι ἐποίησεν τοῦτο, καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν καὶ τοῦτον. |
And his doing this appeared evil before God; and he slew him also. | | And what he did was displeasing in the sight of the LORD, and he slew him also. | וַיֵּרַע בְּעֵינֵי יְהוָה אֲשֶׁר עָשָׂה וַיָּמֶת גַּם־אֹתֹו׃ |

| 11 | εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας Θαμαρ τῇ νύμφῃ αὐτοῦ Κάθου χήρα ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρός σου, ἕως μέγας γένηται Σηλωμ ὁ υἱός μου· εἶπεν γάρ Μήποτε ἀποθάνῃ καὶ οὗτος ὥσπερ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ. ἀπελθοῦσα δὲ Θαμαρ ἐκάθητο ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτῆς. |
And Judas said to Thamar, his daughter-in-law, Sit you a widow in the house of your father-in-law, until Selom my son be grown; for he said, lest he also die as his brethren; and Thamar departed, and sat in the house of her father. | | Then Judah said to Tamar his daughter-in-law, "Remain a widow in your father's house, till Shelah my son grows up" - for he feared that he would die, like his brothers. So Tamar went and dwelt in her father's house. | וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוּדָה לְתָמָר כַּלָּתֹו שְׁבִי אַלְמָנָה בֵית־אָבִיךְ עַד־יִגְדַּל שֵׁלָה בְנִי כִּי אָמַר פֶּן־יָמוּת גַּם־הוּא כְּאֶחָיו וַתֵּלֶךְ תָּמָר וַתֵּשֶׁב בֵּית אָבִיהָ׃ |

| 12 | Ἑπληθύνθησαν δὲ αἱ ἡμέραι καὶ ἀπέθανεν Σαυα ἡ γυνὴ Ιουδα· καὶ παρακληθεὶς Ιουδας ἀνέβη ἐπὶ τοὺς κείροντας τὰ πρόβατα αὐτοῦ, αὐτὸς καὶ Ιρας ὁ ποιμὴν αὐτοῦ ὁ Οδολλαμίτης, εἰς Θαμνα. |
And the days were fulfilled, and Sava the wife of Judas died; and Judas, being comforted, went to them that sheared his sheep, himself and Iras his Shepherd the Odollamite, to Thamna. | | In course of time the wife of Judah, Shua's daughter, died; and when Judah was comforted, he went up to Timnah to his sheepshearers, he and his friend Hirah the Adullamite. | וַיִּרְבּוּ הַיָּמִים וַתָּמָת בַּת־שׁוּעַ אֵשֶׁת־יְהוּדָה וַיִּנָּחֶם יְהוּדָה וַיַּעַל עַל־גֹּזֲזֵי צֹאנֹו הוּא וְחִירָה רֵעֵהוּ הָעֲדֻלָּמִי תִּמְנָתָה׃ |

| 13 | καὶ ἀπηγγέλη Θαμαρ τῇ νύμφῃ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες Ἰδοὺ ὁ πενθερός σου ἀναβαίνει εἰς Θαμνα κεῖραι τὰ πρόβατα αὐτοῦ. |
And it was told Thamar his daughter-in-law, saying, Behold, your father-in-law goes up to Thamna, to shear his sheep. | | And when Tamar was told, "Your father-in-law is going up to Timnah to shear his sheep," | וַיֻּגַּד לְתָמָר לֵאמֹר הִנֵּה חָמִיךְ עֹלֶה תִמְנָתָה לָגֹז צֹאנֹו׃ |

| 14 | καὶ περιελομένη τὰ ἱμάτια τῆς χηρεύσεως ἀφ' ἑαυτῆς περιεβάλετο θέριστρον καὶ ἐκαλλωπίσατο καὶ ἐκάθισεν πρὸς ταῖς πύλαις Αιναν, ἥ ἐστιν ἐν παρόδῳ Θαμνα· εἶδεν γὰρ ὅτι μέγας γέγονεν Σηλωμ, αὐτὸς δὲ οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτὴν αὐτῷ γυναῖκα. |
And having taken off the garments of her widowhood from her, she put on a veil, and ornamented her face, and sat by the gates of Aenan, which is in the way to Thamna, for she saw that Selom was grown; but he gave her not to him for a wife. | | she put off her widow's garments, and put on a veil, wrapping herself up, and sat at the entrance to Ena'im, which is on the road to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown up, and she had not been given to him in marriage. | וַתָּסַר בִּגְדֵי אַלְמְנוּתָהּ מֵעָלֶיהָ וַתְּכַס בַּצָּעִיף וַתִּתְעַלָּף וַתֵּשֶׁב בְּפֶתַח עֵינַיִם אֲשֶׁר עַל־דֶּרֶךְ תִּמְנָתָה כִּי רָאֲתָה כִּי־גָדַל שֵׁלָה וְהִוא לֹא־נִתְּנָה לֹו לְאִשָּׁה׃ |

| 15 | καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν Ιουδας ἔδοξεν αὐτὴν πόρνην εἶναι· κατεκαλύψατο γὰρ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτῆς, καὶ οὐκ ἐπέγνω αὐτήν. |
And when Judas saw her, he thought her to be a harlot; for she covered her face, and he knew her not. | | When Judah saw her, he thought her to be a harlot, for she had covered her face. | וַיִּרְאֶהָ יְהוּדָה וַיַּחְשְׁבֶהָ לְזֹונָה כִּי כִסְּתָה פָּנֶיהָ׃ |

| 16 | ἐξέκλινεν δὲ πρὸς αὐτὴν τὴν ὁδὸν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ Ἔασόν με εἰσελθεῖν πρὸς σέ· οὐ γὰρ ἔγνω ὅτι ἡ νύμφη αὐτοῦ ἐστιν. ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Τί μοι δώσεις, ἐὰν εἰσέλθῃς πρός με; |
And he went out of his way to her, and said to her, Let me come in to you; for he knew not that she was his daughter-in-law; and she said, What will you give me if you should come in to me? | | He went over to her at the road side, and said, "Come, let me come in to you," for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. She said, "What will you give me, that you may come in to me?" | וַיֵּט אֵלֶיהָ אֶל־הַדֶּרֶךְ וַיֹּאמֶר הָבָה־נָּא אָבֹוא אֵלַיִךְ כִּי לֹא יָדַע כִּי כַלָּתֹו הִוא וַתֹּאמֶר מַה־תִּתֶּן־לִּי כִּי תָבֹוא אֵלָי׃ |

| 17 | ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Ἑγώ σοι ἀποστελῶ ἔριφον αἰγῶν ἐκ τῶν προβάτων. ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Ἑὰν δῷς ἀρραβῶνα ἕως τοῦ ἀποστεῖλαί σε. |
And he said, I will send you a kid of the goats from my flock; and she said, [Well], if you will give me an earnest, until you send it. | | He answered, "I will send you a kid from the flock." And she said, "Will you give me a pledge, till you send it?" | וַיֹּאמֶר אָנֹכִי אֲשַׁלַּח גְּדִי־עִזִּים מִן־הַצֹּאן וַתֹּאמֶר אִם־תִּתֵּן עֵרָבֹון עַד שָׁלְחֶךָ׃ |

| 18 | ὁ δὲ εἶπεν Τίνα τὸν ἀρραβῶνά σοι δώσω; ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Τὸν δακτύλιόν σου καὶ τὸν ὁρμίσκον καὶ τὴν ῥάβδον τὴν ἐν τῇ χειρί σου. καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῇ καὶ εἰσῆλθεν πρὸς αὐτήν, καὶ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔλαβεν ἐξ αὐτοῦ. |
And he said, What is the earnest that I shall give you? and she said, Your ring, and your bracelet, and the staff in your hand; and he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him. | | He said, "What pledge shall I give you?" She replied, "Your signet and your cord, and your staff that is in your hand." So he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him. | וַיֹּאמֶר מָה הָעֵרָבֹון אֲשֶׁר אֶתֶּן־לָּךְ וַתֹּאמֶר חֹתָמְךָ וּפְתִילֶךָ וּמַטְּךָ אֲשֶׁר בְּיָדֶךָ וַיִּתֶּן־לָּהּ וַיָּבֹא אֵלֶיהָ וַתַּהַר לֹו׃ |

| 19 | καὶ ἀναστᾶσα ἀπῆλθεν καὶ περιείλατο τὸ θέριστρον ἀφ' ἑαυτῆς καὶ ἐνεδύσατο τὰ ἱμάτια τῆς χηρεύσεως αὐτῆς. |
And she arose and departed, and took her veil from off her, and put on the garments of her widowhood. | | Then she arose and went away, and taking off her veil she put on the garments of her widowhood. | וַתָּקָם וַתֵּלֶךְ וַתָּסַר צְעִיפָהּ מֵעָלֶיהָ וַתִּלְבַּשׁ בִּגְדֵי אַלְמְנוּתָהּ׃ |

| 20 | ἀπέστειλεν δὲ Ιουδας τὸν ἔριφον ἐξ αἰγῶν ἐν χειρὶ τοῦ ποιμένος αὐτοῦ τοῦ Οδολλαμίτου κομίσασθαι τὸν ἀρραβῶνα παρὰ τῆς γυναικός, καὶ οὐχ εὗρεν αὐτήν. |
And Judas sent the kid of the goats by the hand of his shepherd the Odollamite, to receive the pledge from the woman; and he found her not. | | When Judah sent the kid by his friend the Adullamite, to receive the pledge from the woman's hand, he could not find her. | וַיִּשְׁלַח יְהוּדָה אֶת־גְּדִי הָעִזִּים בְּיַד רֵעֵהוּ הָעֲדֻלָּמִי לָקַחַת הָעֵרָבֹון מִיַּד הָאִשָּׁה וְלֹא מְצָאָהּ׃ |

| 21 | ἐπηρώτησεν δὲ τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς ἐκ τοῦ τόπου Ποῦ ἐστιν ἡ πόρνη ἡ γενομένη ἐν Αιναν ἐπὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ; καὶ εἶπαν Οὐκ ἦν ἐνταῦθα πόρνη. |
And he asked the men of the place, Where is the harlot who was in Aenan by the way-side? and they said, There was no harlot here. | | And he asked the men of the place, "Where is the harlot who was at Enaim by the wayside?" And they said, "No harlot has been here." | וַיִּשְׁאַל אֶת־אַנְשֵׁי מְקֹמָהּ לֵאמֹר אַיֵּה הַקְּדֵשָׁה הִוא בָעֵינַיִם עַל־הַדָּרֶךְ וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֹא־הָיְתָה בָזֶה קְדֵשָׁה׃ |

| 22 | καὶ ἀπεστράφη πρὸς Ιουδαν καὶ εἶπεν Οὐχ εὗρον, καὶ οἱ ἄνθρωποι οἱ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου λέγουσιν μὴ εἶναι ὧδε πόρνην. |
And he returned to Judas, and said, I have not found her; and the men of the place say, There is no harlot here. | | So he returned to Judah, and said, "I have not found her; and also the men of the place said, 'No harlot has been here.'" | וַיָּשָׁב אֶל־יְהוּדָה וַיֹּאמֶר לֹא מְצָאתִיהָ וְגַם אַנְשֵׁי הַמָּקֹום אָמְרוּ לֹא־הָיְתָה בָזֶה קְדֵשָׁה׃ |

| 23 | εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας Ἑχέτω αὐτά, ἀλλὰ μήποτε καταγελασθῶμεν· ἐγὼ μὲν ἀπέσταλκα τὸν ἔριφον τοῦτον, σὺ δὲ οὐχ εὕρηκας. |
And Judas said, Let her have them, but let us not be ridiculed; I sent this kid, but you have not found her. | | And Judah replied, "Let her keep the things as her own, lest we be laughed at; you see, I sent this kid, and you could not find her." | וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוּדָה תִּקַּח־לָהּ פֶּן נִהְיֶה לָבוּז הִנֵּה שָׁלַחְתִּי הַגְּדִי הַזֶּה וְאַתָּה לֹא מְצָאתָהּ׃ |

| 24 | Ἑγένετο δὲ μετὰ τρίμηνον ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Ιουδα λέγοντες Ἑκπεπόρνευκεν Θαμαρ ἡ νύμφη σου καὶ ἰδοὺ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχει ἐκ πορνείας. εἶπεν δὲ Ιουδας Ἑξαγάγετε αὐτήν, καὶ κατακαυθήτω. |
And it came to pass after three months, that it was told Judas, saying, Thamar your daughter-in-law has grievously played the harlot, and behold she is with child by whoredom; and Judas said, Bring her out, and let her be burnt. | | About three months later Judah was told, "Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; and moreover she is with child by harlotry." And Judah said, "Bring her out, and let her be burned." | וַיְהִי כְּמִשְׁלֹשׁ חֳדָשִׁים וַיֻּגַּד לִיהוּדָה לֵאמֹר זָנְתָה תָּמָר כַּלָּתֶךָ וְגַם הִנֵּה הָרָה לִזְנוּנִים וַיֹּאמֶר יְהוּדָה הֹוצִיאוּהָ וְתִשָּׂרֵף׃ |

| 25 | αὐτὴ δὲ ἀγομένη ἀπέστειλεν πρὸς τὸν πενθερὸν αὐτῆς λέγουσα Ἑκ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, τίνος ταῦτά ἐστιν, ἐγὼ ἐν γαστρὶ ἔχω. καὶ εἶπεν Ἑπίγνωθι, τίνος ὁ δακτύλιος καὶ ὁ ὁρμίσκος καὶ ἡ ῥάβδος αὕτη. |
And as they were bringing her, she sent to her father-in-law, saying, I am with child by the man whose these things are; and she said, See whose is this ring and bracelet and staff. | | As she was being brought out, she sent word to her father-in-law, "By the man to whom these belong, I am with child." And she said, "Mark, I pray you, whose these are, the signet and the cord and the staff." | הִוא מוּצֵאת וְהִיא שָׁלְחָה אֶל־חָמִיהָ לֵאמֹר לְאִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־אֵלֶּה לֹּו אָנֹכִי הָרָה וַתֹּאמֶר הַכֶּר־נָא לְמִי הַחֹתֶמֶת וְהַפְּתִילִים וְהַמַּטֶּה הָאֵלֶּה׃ |

| 26 | ἐπέγνω δὲ Ιουδας καὶ εἶπεν Δεδικαίωται Θαμαρ ἢ ἐγώ, οὗ εἵνεκεν οὐκ ἔδωκα αὐτὴν Σηλωμ τῷ υἱῷ μου. καὶ οὐ προσέθετο ἔτι τοῦ γνῶναι αὐτήν. |
And Judas knew [them], and said, Thamar is cleared rather than I, forasmuch as I gave her not to Selom my son: and he knew her not again. | | Then Judah acknowledged them and said, "She is more righteous than I, inasmuch as I did not give her to my son Shelah." And he did not lie with her again. | וַיַּכֵּר יְהוּדָה וַיֹּאמֶר צָדְקָה מִמֶּנִּי כִּי־עַל־כֵּן לֹא־נְתַתִּיהָ לְשֵׁלָה בְנִי וְלֹא־יָסַף עֹוד לְדַעְתָּהּ׃ |

| 27 | Ἑγένετο δὲ ἡνίκα ἔτικτεν, καὶ τῇδε ἦν δίδυμα ἐν τῇ γαστρὶ αὐτῆς. |
And it came to pass when she was in labour, that she also had twins in her womb. | | When the time of her delivery came, there were twins in her womb. | וַיְהִי בְּעֵת לִדְתָּהּ וְהִנֵּה תְאֹומִים בְּבִטְנָהּ׃ |

| 28 | ἐγένετο δὲ ἐν τῷ τίκτειν αὐτὴν ὁ εἷς προεξήνεγκεν τὴν χεῖρα· λαβοῦσα δὲ ἡ μαῖα ἔδησεν ἐπὶ τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ κόκκινον λέγουσα Οὗτος ἐξελεύσεται πρότερος. |
And it came to pass as she was bringing forth, one thrust forth his hand, and the midwife having taken hold of it, bound upon his hand a scarlet [thread], saying, This one shall come out first. | | And when she was in labor, one put out a hand; and the midwife took and bound on his hand a scarlet thread, saying, "This came out first." | וַיְהִי בְלִדְתָּהּ וַיִּתֶּן־יָד וַתִּקַּח הַמְיַלֶּדֶת וַתִּקְשֹׁר עַל־יָדֹו שָׁנִי לֵאמֹר זֶה יָצָא רִאשֹׁנָה׃ |

| 29 | ὡς δὲ ἐπισυνήγαγεν τὴν χεῖρα, καὶ εὐθὺς ἐξῆλθεν ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ. ἡ δὲ εἶπεν Τί διεκόπη διὰ σὲ φραγμός; καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Φαρες. |
And when he drew back his hand, then immediately came forth his brother; and she said, Why has the barrier been cut through because of you? and she called his name, Phares. | | But as he drew back his hand, behold, his brother came out; and she said, "What a breach you have made for yourself!" Therefore his name was called Perez. | וַיְהִי כְּמֵשִׁיב יָדֹו וְהִנֵּה יָצָא אָחִיו וַתֹּאמֶר מַה־פָּרַצְתָּ עָלֶיךָ פָּרֶץ וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמֹו פָּרֶץ׃ |

| 30 | καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο ἐξῆλθεν ὁ ἀδελφὸς αὐτοῦ, ἐφ' ᾧ ἦν ἐπὶ τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ τὸ κόκκινον· καὶ ἐκάλεσεν τὸ ὄνομα αὐτοῦ Ζαρα. |
And after this came forth his brother, on whose hand was the scarlet thread; and she called his name, Zara. | | Afterward his brother came out with the scarlet thread upon his hand; and his name was called Zerah. | וְאַחַר יָצָא אָחִיו אֲשֶׁר עַל־יָדֹו הַשָּׁנִי וַיִּקְרָא שְׁמֹו זָרַח׃ ס |
