Ataroth, et Dibon, et Jazer, et Nemra, Hesebon, et Eleale, et Saban, et Nebo, et Beon, Astaroth, and Dibon, and Jacer, and Nemra, Esebon, and Eleale, and Sabam, Ataroth, and Dibon, and Jazer, and Nemra, Hesebon, and Eleale, and Saban, and Nebo, and Beon,
terra, quam percussit Dominus in conspectu filiorum Israël, regio uberrima est ad pastum animalium: et nos servi tui habemus jumenta plurima, and Nebo, and Beon, the lond which the Lord smoot in the siyt of the sones of Israel, is of moost plenteuous cuntrey to the pasture of beestis; and we thi seruauntis han ful many beestis; The land, which the Lord hath conquered in the sight of the children of Israel, is a very fertile soil for the feeding of beasts: and we thy servants have very much cattle:
precamurque si invenimus gratiam coram te, ut des nobis famulis tuis eam in possessionem, nec facias nos transire Jordanem. and we preyen, if we han founde grace bifor thee, that thou yyue to vs thi seruauntis that cuntrey in to possessioun, and make not vs to passe Jordan. And we pray thee, if we have found favour in thy sight, that thou give it to us thy servants in possession, and make us not pass over the Jordan.
To whiche Moises answeride, Whether youre britheren schulen go to batel, and ye schulen sitte here? And Moses answered them: What, shall your brethren go to fight, and will you sit here?
cur subvertitis mentes filiorum Israël, ne transire audeant in locum, quem eis daturus est Dominus? Whi peruerten ye the soulis of Israel, that thei doren not passe in to the place, which the Lord schal yyue to hem? Why do ye overturn the minds of the children of Israel, that they may not dare to pass into the place which the Lord hath given them?
Whether youre fadris diden not so, whanne Y sente fro Cades Barne to aspie the lond, Was it not thus your fathers did, when I sent from Cadesbarne to view the land?
cumque venissent usque ad Vallem botri, lustrata omni regione, subverterunt cor filiorum Israël, ut non intrarent fines, quos eis Dominus dedit. and whanne thei camen to the valey of Clustre, whanne al the cuntrey was cumpassid, thei peruertiden the herte of the sones of Israel, that thei entriden not in to the coostis, whiche the Lord yaf to hem. And when they were come as far as the valley of the cluster, having viewed all the country, they overturned the hearts of the children of Israel, that they should not enter into the coasts, which the Lord gave them.
Qui iratus juravit, dicens: And the Lord was wrooth, and swoor, And he swore in his anger, saying:.
Si videbunt homines isti, qui ascenderunt ex Ægypto a viginti annis et supra, terram, quam sub juramento pollicitus sum Abraham, Isaac, et Jacob: et noluerunt sequi me, seiynge, Thes men that stieden fro Egipt, fro twenti yeer and aboue, schulen not se the lond which Y bihiyte vndur an ooth to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and nolden sue me, If these men, that came up out of Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, shall see the land, which I promised with an oath to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: because they would not follow me,
præter Caleb filium Jephone Cenezæum, et Josue filium Nun: isti impleverunt voluntatem meam. outakun Caleph, Cenezei, the sone of Jephone, and Josue, the sone of Nun; these tweyne filliden my wille. Except Caleb the son of Jephone the Cenezite, and Josue the son of Nun: these have fulfilled my will.
Iratusque Dominus adversum Israël, circumduxit eum per desertum quadraginta annis, donec consumeretur universa generatio, quæ fecerat malum in conspectu ejus. And the Lord was wrooth ayens Israel, and ledde hym aboute the deseert bi fourti yeer, til al the generacioun was wastid, that hadde do yuel in the siyt of the Lord. And the Lord being angry against Israel, led them about through the desert forty years, until the whole generation, that had done evil in his sight, was consumed.
And Moyses seide, Lo! ye encressyngis, and nurreis, ether nurschid children, of synful men, han ryse for youre fadris, that ye schulden encreesse the strong veniaunce of the Lord ayens Israel. And behold, said he, you are risen up instead of your fathers, the increase and offspring of sinful men, to augment the fury of the Lord against Israel.
That if ye nylen sue the Lord, in the wildirnesse he schal forsake the puple, and ye schulen be cause of the deeth of alle men. For if you will not follow him, he will leave the people in the wilderness, end you shall be the cause of the destruction of all.
At illi prope accedentes, dixerunt: Caulas ovium fabricabimus, et stabula jumentorum, parvulis quoque nostris urbes munitas: And thei neiyiden nyy, and seiden, We schulen make foldis of scheep, and the stablis of beestis, and we schulen make strengthid citees to oure litle children. But they coming near, said: We will make sheepfolds, and stalls for our cattle, and strong cities for our children :
nos autem ipsi armati et accincti pergemus ad prælium ante filios Israël, donec introducamus eos ad loca sua. Parvuli nostri, et quidquid habere possumus, erunt in urbibus muratis, propter habitatorum insidias. Forsothe we vs silf schulen be armed to defence, and schulen be gird with armeris to asailyng, and schulen go to batel bifor the sones of Israel, til we bryngen hem in to her places; oure litle children and what euer thing we moun haue, schulen be in strengthid cytees, for the tresouns of the dwelleris. And we ourselves will go armed and ready for battle before the children of Israel, until we bring them in unto their places. Our little ones, and all we have, shall be in walled cities, for fear of the ambushes of the inhabitants.
Non revertemur in domos nostras, usque dum possideant filii Israël hæreditatem suam: We schulen not turne ayen in to oure housis, til the sones of Israel welden her eritage; We will not return into our houses until the children of Israel possess their inheritance:
nec quidquam quæremus trans Jordanem, quia jam habemus nostram possessionem in orientali ejus plaga. and we schulen not axe ony thing ouer Jordan, for we han now oure possessioun in the eest coost therof. Neither will we seek any thing beyond the Jordan, because we have already our possession on the east side thereof,
Quibus Moyses ait: Si facitis quod promittitis, expediti pergite coram Domino ad pugnam: To whiche Moises seide, If ye doen that, that ye biheten, be ye maad redi, and go ye to batel bifor the Lord; And Moses said to them: If you do what you promise, go on well appointed for war before the Lord:
et omnis vir bellator armatus Jordanem transeat, donec subvertat Dominus inimicos suos, and ech man fiytere be armed, and passe Jordan, til the Lord distrye hise enemyes, And let every fighting man pass over the Jordan, until the Lord overthrow his enemies :
et subjiciatur ei omnis terra: tunc eritis inculpabiles apud Dominum et apud Israël, et obtinebitis regiones, quas vultis, coram Domino. and al the lond be maad suget to hym; thanne ye schulen be giltles anentis God, and anentis Israel, and ye schulen holde the cuntreys, whiche ye wolen, bifor the Lord. And all the land be brought under him, then shall you be blameless before the Lord and before Israel, and you shall obtain the countries that you desire, before the Lord.
But if ye doon not that, that ye seien, it is not doute to ony man, that ne ye synnen ayens God; and wite ye, that youre synne schal take you. But if you do not what you say, no man can doubt but you sin against God: and know ye, that your sin shall overtake you.
Therfor bilde ye citees to youre litle children, and foldis and stablis to scheep, and to beestis; and fille ye that, that ye bihiyten. Build therefore cities for your children, and folds and stalls for your sheep and beasts, and accomplish what you have promised.
And the sones of Gad and of Ruben seiden to Moises, We ben thi seruauntis; we schulen do that, that oure lord comaundith. And the children of Gad and Ruben said to Moses: We are thy servants, we will do what my lord commandeth.
Parvulos nostros, et mulieres, et pecora, ac jumenta relinquemus in urbibus Galaad: We schulen leeue oure litle children, and wymmen, and scheep, and beestis in the citees of Galaad; We will leave our children, and our wives and sheep and cattle, in the cities of Galaad:
nos autem famuli tui omnes expediti pergemus ad bellum, sicut tu, domine, loqueris. forsothe alle we thi seruauntis schulen go redi to batel, as thou, lord, spekist. And we thy servants all well appointed will march on to the war, as thou, my lord, speakest.
Præcepit ergo Moyses Eleazaro sacerdoti, et Josue filio Nun, et principibus familiarum per tribus Israël, et dixit ad eos: Therfor Moyses comaundide to Eleazar, preest, and to Josue, the sone of Nun, and to the princes of meynees, bi the lynagis of Israel, and seide to hem, Moses therefore commanded Eleazar the priest, and Josue the son of Nun, and the princes of the families of all the tribes of Israel, and said to them:
Si transierint filii Gad et filii Ruben vobiscum Jordanem omnes armati ad bellum coram Domino, et vobis fuerit terra subjecta, date eis Galaad in possessionem. If the sones of Gad, and the sones of Ruben goen alle armed with you, to batel bifor the Lord, and the lond be maad suget to you, yyue ye to hem Galaad in to possessioun; If the children of Gad, and the children of Ruben pass with you over the Jordan, all armed for war before the Lord, and the land be made subject to you: give them Galaad in possession.
Sin autem noluerint transire armati vobiscum in terram Chanaan, inter vos habitandi accipiant loca. but if thei nylen passe with you in to the lond of Chanaan, take thei places to dwelle among you. But if they will not pass armed with you into the land of Chanaan, let them receive places to dwell in among you.
Responderuntque filii Gad et filii Ruben: Sicut locutus est Dominus servis suis, ita faciemus: And the sones of Gad and the sones of Ruben answeriden, As the Lord spak to hise seruauntis, so we schulen do; And the children of Gad, and the children of Ruben answered: As the Lord hath spoken to his servants, so will we do:
ipsi armati pergemus coram Domino in terram Chanaan, et possessionem jam suscepisse nos confitemur trans Jordanem. we schulen go armed bifor the Lord, in to the lond of Chanaan, and we knowlechen, that we han take now possessioun ouer Jordan. We will go armed before the Lord into the land of Chanaan, and we confess that we have already received our possession beyond the Jordan.
And so Moises yaf to the sones of Gad and of Ruben, and to half the lynage of Manasses, sone of Joseph, the rewme of Seon, kyng of Ammorey, and the rewme of Og, kyng of Basan, and the lond of hem, with her citees, bi cumpas. Moses therefore gave to the children of Cad and of Ruben, and to the half tribe of Manasses the son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sehon king of the Amorrhites, and the kingdom of Og king of Basan, and their land and the cities thereof round about.
Igitur exstruxerunt filii Gad, Dibon, et Ataroth, et Aroër, Therfor the sones of Gad bildiden Dibon, and Astaroth, and Aroer, And the sons of Cad built Dibon, and Ataroth, and Aroer,
et Etroth, et Sophan, et Jazer, et Jegbaa, and RothSophan, and Jazer, and Jebaa, And Etroth, and Sophan, and Jazer, and Jegbaa,
et Bethnemra, et Betharan, urbes munitas, et caulas pecoribus suis. and BeethNemra, and Betharan, strengid citees; and foldis to her beestis. And Bethnemra, and Betharan, fenced cities, and folds for their cattle.
Filii vero Ruben ædificaverunt Hesebon, et Eleale, et Cariathaim, Forsothe the sones of Ruben bildiden Esebon, and Eleale, and Cariathiarym, and Nabo, But the children of Ruben built Hesebon, and Eleale, and Cariathaim,
et Nabo, et Baalmeon versis nominibus, Sabama quoque: imponentes vocabula urbibus, quas exstruxerunt. and Balmeon, whanne the names weren turned, and thei bildiden Sabama; and puttiden names to the citees, whiche thei hadden bildid. And Nabo, and Baalmeon (their names being changed) and Sabama: giving names to the cities which they had built.
Porro filii Machir filii Manasse, perrexerunt in Galaad, et vastaverunt eam interfecto Amorrhæo habitatore ejus. Forsothe the sones of Machir, sone of Manasses, yeden in to Galaad, and distrieden it, and killiden Ammorei, enhabitere therof. Moreover the children of Machir, the son of Manasses, went into Galaad, and wasted it, cutting off the Amorrhites, the inhabitants thereof.
Dedit ergo Moyses terram Galaad Machir filio Manasse, qui habitavit in ea. Therfor Moises yaf the lond of Galaad to Machir, sone of Manasses, which Machir dwellide ther ynne. And Moses gave the land of Galaad to Machir the son of Manasses, and he dwelt in it.
Forsothe Jair, the sone of Manasses, yede, and occupiede the townes therof, whiche he clepide Anochiair, that is, the townes of Jair. And Jair the son of Manasses went, and took the villages thereof, and he called them Havoth Jair, that is to say, the villages of Jair.
Also Nobe yede, and took Canath, with hise townes, and clepide it, bi his name, Nobe. Nobe also went, and took Canath with the villages thereof: and he called it by his own name, Nobe.
