1 In principio
creavit Deus cælum et terram.
In the bigynnyng
God made of nouyt heuene and erthe.
In the beginning
God created heaven, and earth.
GENESIS. GENERATIONS - The creation of the Universe. Gn.1.1-2.4
2 Terra autem erat inanis et vacua,
et tenebræ erant super faciem abyssi:
et spiritus Dei ferebatur super aquas.
Forsothe the erthe was idel and voide,
and derknessis weren on the face of depthe;
and the Spiryt of the Lord was borun on the watris.
And the earth was void and empty,
and darkness was upon the face of the deep;
and the spirit of God moved over the waters.
 
3 Dixitque Deus:
Fiat lux.
Et facta est lux.
And God seide,
Liyt be maad,
and liyt was maad.
And God said:
Be light made.
And light was made.
 
4 Et vidit Deus lucem quod esset bona:
et divisit lucem a tenebris.
And God seiy the liyt, that it was good,
and he departide the liyt fro derknessis;
And God saw the light that it was good; and he divided the light from the darkness.  
5 Appellavitque lucem Diem,
et tenebras Noctem:
factumque est vespere et mane,
dies unus.
And he clepide the liyt, dai,
and the derknessis, nyyt.
And the euentid and morwetid was maad,
o daie.
And he called the light Day,
and the darkness Night;
and there was evening and morning
one day.
 
6 Dixit quoque Deus:
Fiat firmamentum in medio aquarum:
et dividat aquas ab aquis.
And God seide,
The firmament be maad in the myddis of watris,
and departe watris fro watris.
And God said:
Let there be a firmament made amidst the waters:
and let it divide the waters from the waters.
 
7 Et fecit Deus firmamentum,
divisitque aquas, quæ erant sub firmamento, ab his, quæ erant super firmamentum.
Et factum est ita.
And God made the firmament,
and departide the watris that weren vndur the firmament fro these watris that weren on the firmament;
and it was don so.
And God made a firmament,
and divided the waters that were under the firmament, from those that were above the firmament, and it was so.
 
8 Vocavitque Deus firmamentum, Cælum:
et factum est vespere et mane,
dies secundus.
And God clepide the firmament, heuene.
And the euentid and morwetid was maad,
the secounde dai.
And God called the firmament, Heaven;
and the evening and morning were the second day.
 
9 Dixit vero Deus:
Congregentur aquæ, quæ sub cælo sunt, in locum unum: et appareat arida.
Et factum est ita.
Forsothe God seide,
The watris, that ben vndur heuene, be gaderid in to o place,
and a drie place appere;
and it was doon so.
God also said:
Let the waters that are under the heaven, be gathered together into one place:
and let the dry land appear.
And it was so done.
 
10 Et vocavit Deus aridam Terram, congregationesque aquarum appellavit Maria.
Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum.
And God clepide the drie place, erthe;
and he clepide the gadryngis togidere of watris, the sees.
And God seiy that it was good;
And God called the dry land, Earth;
and the gathering together of the waters, he called Seas.
And God saw that it was good.
 
11 Et ait:
Germinet terra herbam virentem,
et facientem semen,
et lignum pomiferum faciens fructum juxta genus suum,
cujus semen in semetipso sit super terram.
Et factum est ita.
and seide,
The erthe brynge forth greene eerbe and makynge seed,
and appil tre makynge fruyt bi his kynde,
whos seed be in it silf on erthe;
and it was doon so.
And he said:
Let the earth bring forth the green herb,
and such as may seed,

and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind,
which may have seed in itself upon the earth.
And it was so done.
 
12 Et protulit terra herbam virentem,
et facientem semen juxta genus suum,
lignumque faciens fructum,
et habens unumquodque sementem secundum speciem suam.
Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum.
And the erthe brouyte forth greene erbe and makynge seed bi his kynde,
and a tre makynge fruyt,
and ech hauynge seed by his kynde.
And God seiy that it was good.
And the earth brought forth the green herb,
and such as yieldeth seed according to its kind,
and the tree that beareth fruit having seed each one according to its kind.
And God saw that it was good.
 
13 Et factum est vespere et mane,
dies tertius.
And the euentid and morwetid was maad,
the thridde dai.
And the evening and the morning were the third day.  
14 Dixit autem Deus:
Fiant luminaria in firmamento cæli,
et dividant diem ac noctem,
et sint in signa et tempora,
et dies et annos:
Forsothe God seide,
Liytis be maad in the firmament of heuene,
and departe tho the dai and niyt;
and be tho in to signes, and tymes,
and daies, and yeeris;
And God said:
Let there be lights made in the firmament of heaven,
to divide the day and the night,
and let them be for signs, and for seasons,
and for days and years:
 
15 ut luceant in firmamento cæli,
et illuminent terram.
Et factum est ita.
and shyne tho in the firmament of heuene, and liytne tho the erthe;
and it was doon so.
To shine in the firmament of heaven, and to give light upon the earth.
And it was so done.
 
16 Fecitque Deus duo luminaria magna: luminare majus, ut præesset diei:
et luminare minus, ut præesset nocti:
et stellas.
And God made twei grete liytis,
the gretter liyt that it schulde be bifore to the dai,
and the lesse liyt that it schulde be bifore to the niyt;
and God made sterris;
And God made two great lights:
a greater light to rule the day;
and a lesser light to rule the night:
and the stars.
 
17 Et posuit eas in firmamento cæli,
ut lucerent super terram,
and settide tho in the firmament of heuene,
that tho schulden schyne on erthe,
And he set them in the firmament of heaven to shine upon the earth.  
18 et præessent diei ac nocti, et dividerent lucem ac tenebras.
Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum.
and that tho schulden be bifore to the dai and nyyt,
and schulden departe liyt and derknesse.
And God seiy that it was good.
And to rule the day and the night,
and to divide the light and the darkness.
And God saw that it was good.
 
19 Et factum est vespere et mane,
dies quartus.
And the euentid and the morwetid was maad,
the fourthe dai.
And the evening and morning were the fourth day.  
20 Dixit etiam Deus:
Producant aquæ reptile animæ viventis,
et volatile super terram sub firmamento cæli.
Also God seide,
The watris brynge forth a crepynge beeste of lyuynge soule,
and a brid fleynge aboue erthe vndur the firmament of heuene.
God also said:
Let the waters bring forth the creeping creature having life,
and the fowl that may fly over the earth under the firmament of heaven.
 
21 creavitque Deus cete grandia,
et omnem animam viventem atque motabilem,
quam produxerant aquæ in species suas,
et omne volatile secundum genus suum.
Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum.
And God made of nouyt grete whallis,
and ech lyuynge soule and mouable,
whiche the watris han brouyt forth in to her kyndis;
and God made of nouyt ech volatile bi his kynde.
And God seiy that it was good;
And God created the great whales,
and every living and moving creature,
which the waters brought forth,
according to their kinds,
and every winged fowl according to its kind.
And God saw that it was good.
 
22 Benedixitque eis, dicens:
Crescite, et multiplicamini,
et replete aquas maris:
avesque multiplicentur super terram.
and blesside hem, and seide,
Wexe ye, and be ye multiplied,
and fille ye the watris of the see,
and briddis be multiplied on erthe.
And he blessed them, saying:
Increase and multiply,
and fill the waters of the sea:
and let the birds be multiplied upon the earth.
 
23 Et factum est vespere et mane,
dies quintus.
And the euentid and the morwetid was maad,
the fyuethe dai.
And the evening and morning were the fifth day.  
24 Dixit quoque Deus:
Producat terra animam viventem in genere suo,
jumenta, et reptilia, et bestias terræ secundum species suas.
Factumque est ita.
And God seide,
The erthe brynge forth a lyuynge soul in his kynde,
werk beestis, and crepynge beestis,
and vnresonable beestis of erthe, bi her kyndis;
and it was don so.
And God said:
Let the earth bring forth the living creature in its kind,
cattle and creeping things,
and beasts of the earth, according to their kinds.
And it was so done.
 
25 Et fecit Deus bestias terræ juxta species suas,
et jumenta, et omne reptile terræ in genere suo.
Et vidit Deus quod esset bonum,
And God made vnresonable beestis of erthe bi her kyndes, and werk beestis,
and ech crepynge beeste of erthe in his kynde.
And God seiy that it was good;
And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, and cattle,
and every thing that creepeth on the earth after its kind.
And God saw that it was good.
 
26 et ait:
Faciamus hominem ad imaginem et similitudinem nostram:
et præsit piscibus maris, et volatilibus cæli,
et bestiis, universæque terræ, omnique reptili, quod movetur in terra.
and seide,
Make we man to oure ymage and liknesse,
and be he souereyn to the fischis of the see, and to the volatilis of heuene, and to vnresonable beestis of erthe, and to ech creature, and to ech crepynge beest, which is moued in erthe.
And he said:
Let us make man to our image and likeness:
and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that moveth upon the earth.
 
27 Et creavit Deus hominem ad imaginem suam:
ad imaginem Dei creavit illum,
masculum et feminam creavit eos.
And God made of nouyt a man to his ymage and liknesse;
God made of nouyt a man, to the ymage of God;
God made of nouyt hem, male and female.
And God created man to his own image:
to the image of God he created him:
male and female he created them.
 
28 Benedixitque illis Deus, et ait: Crescite et multiplicamini, et replete terram, et subjicite eam, et dominamini piscibus maris, et volatilibus cæli, et universis animantibus, quæ moventur super terram. And God blesside hem, and seide,
Encreesse ye, and be ye multiplied,
and fille ye the erthe, and make ye it suget,
and be ye lordis to fischis of the see, and to volatilis of heuene, and to alle lyuynge beestis that ben moued on erthe.
And God blessed them, saying:
Increase and multiply,
and fill the earth, and subdue it,
and rule over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and all living creatures that move upon the earth.
 
29 Dixitque Deus:
Ecce dedi vobis omnem herbam afferentem semen super terram,
et universa ligna quæ habent in semetipsis sementem generis sui,
ut sint vobis in escam:
And God seide,
Lo! Y haue youe to you ech eerbe berynge seed on erthe,
and alle trees that han in hem silf the seed of her kynde,
that tho be in to mete to you;
And God said:
Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed upon the earth,
and all trees that have in themselves seed of their own kind,
to be your meat:
 
30 et cunctis animantibus terræ,
omnique volucri cæli,
et universis quæ moventur in terra,
et in quibus est anima vivens,
ut habeant ad vescendum.
Et factum est ita.
and to alle lyuynge beestis of erthe,
and to ech brid of heuene,
and to alle thingis that ben moued in erthe,
and in whiche is a lyuynge soule,
that tho haue to ete;
and it was doon so.
And to all the beasts of the earth,
and to every fowl of the air,
and to all that move upon the earth,
and wherein there is life,
that they may have to feed upon.
And it was so done.
 
31 Viditque Deus cuncta quæ fecerat,
et erant valde bona.
Et factum est vespere et mane,
dies sextus.
And God seiy alle thingis whiche he made,
and tho weren ful goode.
And the euentid and morwetid was maad,
the sixte day.
And God saw all the things that he had made,
and they were very good.
And the evening and morning were the sixth day.
